Patrick James Dempsey, 90 years old, of
Hendersonville, NC (formerly of
Syracuse, NY) passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on February 17, 2026 after an extremely brief illness.
Patrick was born on March 19, 1935 to Joseph and Theresa (Collins) Dempsey in
South Bend, IN. After Patrick graduated from John Adams High School in 1953, he served 2 years in the US Army. The GI Bill enabled Patrick to further his education at Western Michigan University where he received a Bachelors of Science degree, as well as a great deal of notoriety as an accomplished wrestler. He was commonly referred to as "Indian Joe" by the wrestling community at WMU. Patrick then went on to graduate school at the University of Michigan where he received his masters in "Guidance Counseling".
In 1957 he went on a blind date and met his lovely wife…a beautiful registered nurse from East Tawas, Michigan named Barbara Jean Sager. They were married on June 20th, 1959 and went on to have 3 daughters - Julie, Suzanne and Marcia.
In 1966 Patrick moved his young family from Saline, Michigan to Syracuse, New York to pursue a career in Education with the Syracuse City School District. He received a CAS in Education Administration from Syracuse University and was hired as the Director of Guidance Counseling for the Syracuse School District. He became the very first Director of Special Programs when landmark legislation was passed in the 1970's, generally referred to as "The Inclusion Act". Patrick spent a great deal of his time lobbying for this particular legislation, and became part of a movement to ensure that every child with special needs would receive a free and public education. He was very passionate about this issue.
His granddaughter currently champions the very same causes, and has mirrored the very same career path in a school district in Western NYS. This brought a great deal of joy and pride to Patrick in his later years.
Patrick retired from this position in 1992 after 26 years of educational service, and then taught courses and oversaw programs at both Syracuse University and Lemoyne College.
After tiring of the Syracuse weather they caught a wild hair and headed south to the mountains of Western North Carolina. They have met so very many wonderful friends.
Patrick was an accomplished writer, a prolific speaker and an avid reader. He was fascinated with Abraham Lincoln and The Civil War. He loved hunting, fishing, game dinners and all of the camaraderie that came with it. His children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren adored him.
He was a die-hard supporter of Notre Dame University's Fighting Irish!
Patrick was predeceased by his parents, his brothers (Louis and Frank Dempsey) and his grandson Richard Mancuso Jr.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of 67 years - his children, Julie (Richard) Mancuso, Suzanne (Michael) Ford, Marcia (Paul) Daily and his sister Carolyn Schmanske. His grandchildren Morgan, Alexandra, Patrick, Madelyn, Sean, Veronica, Heather and David will miss him dearly. He has 5 great-grandchildren and they loved their G Pa.
A celebration of life will take place April 18, 2026, from 2pm to 4pm, at The Hendersonville Elks Lodge- 546 N. Justice St,
Hendersonville, NC 28739. All are welcome!
