Peter "Pete" Orville Halmes

PETER ORVILLE HALMES 1927 – 2016 Peter "Pete" Orville Halmes age 89 of Plattsmouth, NE peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at his residence. He was born on February 16, 1927 to William Franklin and Ella Martha (Siemoneit) Halmes on his parent's farm in rural Plattsmouth, NE. Pete was raised on his family's farm, attended Bestor Rural School through the eighth grade, and graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1943. He began his life's work as a farmer at a young age and continued to farm his entire life. He met the love of his life, Helen Marie Kracl and they were later married on March 28, 1951 in Morse Bluff, NE. Pete and Helen made their home and raised their children on his family's farm west of Plattsmouth. He was a progressive farmer, who enjoyed keeping up with the latest in research and technology. Pete was born, lived his entire life, and died in the house his ancestors built in 1867. Pete was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit, Knights of Columbus, and Farm Bureau, all of Plattsmouth. He was president of the Weeping Water CO-OP for over 25 years and he was the recipient of the Cass County Farm Family of the Year in 2014. He is survived by his two sons: Robert Halmes Sr. and wife Marilyn of Plattsmouth, NE; Nick Halmes III of Plattsmouth, NE; his daughter: Ellen Goodenberger and husband Marshall of Elwood, NE; eight grandchildren: Robert Halmes Jr., Christine Willingham and husband Archie, Elizabeth O'Neil and husband Greg, Sara Halmes, Paul Halmes and wife Melissa Mosier, Rachel Halmes, Martin Goodenberger and wife Brynn Lastovica, Laura Komenda and husband Joseph, eight great grandchildren: Izzy Willingham, Meghan O'Neil, Sara Willingham, Natalie Halmes, Anthony Halmes, David Mosier, Ruelle Goodenberger, Aidan O'Neil; sister: Bernice Fahlberg of Lincoln, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Pete was preceded in death by his parents: William and Ella Halmes, his wife: Helen Halmes, three bothers-in-law: Ken Thompson, Bob Fahlberg and John Schanbacher, and thirteen hours after Pete passed away, his sister: Betty Schanbacher. Visitations will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Monday, April 18, 2016 at Roby Funeral Home in Plattsmouth. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 P.M., Monday, April 18, 2016 at Church of The Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Church of The Holy Spirit with Father Loras K. Grell officiating, Greg O'Neil as lector, George Sacks and Lowell Daisley as acolytes, Terry Little as vocalist, and Jolene Rogge as organist. The Pallbearers will be Rob Halmes Jr., Christine Willingham, Elizabeth O'Neil, Sara Halmes, Paul Halmes, Rachel Halmes, Martin Goodenberger, and Laura Komenda. Pete's final resting place will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Plattsmouth, next to his wife Helen. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorials to the Plattsmouth Rescue Squad or Church of The Holy Spirit.
