Peter Maestas

Peter Joe Maestas, age 62, of Chili, NM, passed away peacefully after a short illness with his family at his side on December 12, 2025. 

Peter was preceded in death by his father Jose Pete Maestas; grandparents Jose and Teodorita Salazar, Enrique Maestas and Adelina Maestas; niece Krisanne Salazar; uncle Salomon Salazar and his wife Flora; aunt Cleo Lopez and her husband Margarito; aunt  Angelina Garcia and her husband Manuel, aunt, Virginia Gonzales and her husband Celestino; uncle Floyd Prando.

Peter is survived by his mother Emily S. Maestas; sisters Marcella Sloan and her husband Blane and Suzanne Padilla; nieces Marilyn Eggleston and husband Jonathan; Marissa Humes and husband Brice; nephews Rubel Martinez and Nicholas Padilla; beloved great-niece Emilia Eggleston; aunt Rosita Lozano and husband Armando; aunt Sadie Salazar and her husband Pat; aunt Elizabeth Vigil and her husband John; aunt Laura Prando; as well as many cousins.

Peter was a cosmetologist by trade and lived in Chili with his parents. His mother Emily devotedly cared for him his whole life and he relied on her for everything. Through the connections he made in the hairdressing world he was never short of friends. His sincerity and generosity are what drew people close to him. He was the life of every party and was everyone’s favorite dance partner. Peter was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it and gave whatever he had to help his friends and family. He was never jealous of anyone and was unfailingly forgiving of everyone. He showed so much love and gratitude for any small gift or gesture that gave immediate gratification. While Peter led a hard life in many ways, his pure benevolence is something to strive for.

Peter leaves a void in our hearts that will never be filled. The family would like to thank all of those who visited Peter during his final days.

 A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Espanola, NM, with Mass to follow at 10:30 am.  Burial will follow at the San Jose Catholic Cemetery in Hernandez, NM.

Pallbearers will be Rubel Martinez III, Nicholas Padilla, Jonathan Eggleston, Brice Humes, Jose Salazar, Ben Espinoza, Raul Padilla and Rubel Martinez II.
