Peter Mamales Obituary

Peter William Mamales, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on a beautiful Tuesday morning, March 12th, 2024, due to complications related to Alzheimer’s.

Born the seventh of eight children, Pete, known to many as “Pete the Greek who lives down the street”, was born to Vassilios (Bill) and Asihmo (Asme) Karidis Mamalis, at home in Magna, Utah on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1932.

When his father died, he was given the responsibility of helping to manage the family farm and the animals, which provided for the family. While growing up in Magna with his siblings Tula, Harry, Katherine, Nellie, Sam, George, and Tessie, he loved the outdoors and to play and excel in football, basketball, track and field at Cyprus High School.

Pete joined the Airforce and served four years during the Korean conflict as a flight engineer, assigned to the Strategic Air Command 15th unit, stationed at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. His missions took him to all parts of the world. While stationed at the air base, he met and then married Delia Darlene Oldham. Pete and Darlene settled in Magna, Utah where they were sealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Salt Lake City Temple.

Pete was employed by Ajax Presses, McGraw Edison Corp NL Industries, Chevron Chemical Company, and Floor Daniel Company at Hercules Inc, to name a few, all as an Engineering Manager, which he excelled immensely.

Pete and Darlene were temple workers at the Jordan River Temple, as well as serving in several roles in church leadership and other capacities in Salt Lake City. They later moved to Coeur d’Alene, ID, where they continued their retirement, including serving in the Spokane temple as ordinance workers. Pete and Darlene also worked at Ramsey Elementary School as aids. Pete loved to fish on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Fernan Lake, and both loved to work their gardens, enjoying the company of friend and family. Darlene later passed away on November 5th, 2003.

Pete met Kim Goodwin at a church singles adult dinner and dance, and the two later married April 23rd, 2005. Pete and Kim enjoyed their new life, fishing, gardening, traveling and taking time for their friends, family and loved ones, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pete and Kim also accepted and served a mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. He was a strong influence, very admired and loved among all the family, including with Kim’s children and grandchildren.

Pete is survived by his children: Pamela and her husband Carl Knight, Julie Mamales, David Mamales, and Michael Mamales and his wife Katrina Henrie, his ten grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, his brother Sam Mamales, and sisters Tessie Huggard and Nellie Cayias.

Pete touched the lives of everyone he encountered and will always be remembered as person we all admired, leaving a lasting impressions and legacy for all to follow.

Services will be held on Saturday March 23rd, 2024 at 11:30 am, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward house: 2801 N 4th St, Coeur d'Alene, ID  83815
