Peter John "Pete" McKenna, 81, of Roswell GA, succumbed to Parkinson's disease at his residence, Saint George Village, on October 30, 2024.
The eldest of 3 boys born to Florence Theresa Geary and John Joseph McKenna, Pete was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 30, 1943. In adolescence, he lived in Bergen County, NJ where he attended Bergen Catholic and Dumont High. He then proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserve from 1962-1966 and attended East Carolina University.
Childhood summers were spent with his family in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. It was also in the Poconos where he met Patricia Ann "Pat" Kujda of Scranton. Pat was literally swept off her feet as Pete taught her how to dive the very day they met by the pool. Their courtship continued in NYC where they lived and worked, solidifying two places in the world that remained Pete's most near and dear. Married in 1969 and settling in Atlanta, they raised their children and remained hopelessly devoted to one another for 55 years.
Pete's business savvy in finance management led to a 30-year career with Canon U.S.A, Incorporated. In 1978, he was hired as Southeast Regional Credit Manager. His skillset for improving the bottom line was unconventionally keen and he became the first American in the Japanese corporation to serve as a Branch Director.
In his personal life, Pete was also an outlier of the cost-efficient kind. His penchant for securing the best deal on any good or service at any time, for any reason, anywhere, is likely unmatched. And when he would pack a single, extra-small duffle for a two-week vacation or bring one rod on a fishing trip, he always remarked, "It's all you need!" He knew his approaches were unorthodox, and he could laugh at himself about them, too, but he wasn't going to change a thing.
Pete was intentional about spending his free time with his family, and together they shared his love of boating, especially on his beloved Chattahoochee River and on Lake Burton, and in his love of travel. You expected the unexpected and your itinerary was overflowing when you travelled with Pete. "If you say you're going to do something, you do it" was his trademark philosophy, and so your checklist was always completed. Pete & Pat visited 22 countries together as well as most of the National Parks in the US and Alaska, frequenting their favorites.
An avid tennis player, Pete's winning slice annoyed all his opponents. He and Pat loved the game and some of their dearest friendships were forged during these years. Pete also made sure he maintained relationships with extended family and remained close to his two brothers as well as his childhood friends. He delighted in his grandchildren, and he refurbished his vintage model railroad collection to make for years of fun "running trains with Papa."
Pete's faith was strong in the Catholic Church, and Saint Andrew was his church home for nearly 40 years. There, he served as a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and he drove the church bus to bring those who needed assistance to Mass. Breakfast, his favorite meal of the day, was a given after mass. In the South, the Waffle House became Pete's best stand in for a "real" NJ diner.
Upon his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2015, Pete's last chapter began without regret or bitterness, and he immediately traded tennis for pickleball, took up boxing, e-biking and brushed back up on his ping pong skills all in effort to slow his disease progression. To be sure, it's Pat whom he's most grateful. She cared for him with all her heart in his final years, and before that was always on his side and by his side with unconditional love. Their lifetime of shared memories created a bond that is timeless.
Pete is survived by his loving wife, his children Andrea McKenna Bray (John) and Jonathan Peter McKenna (Leslie), his grandchildren John Willam Bray, Jr, Anna McKenna Bray, Colston Andrew McKenna and Elijah River McKenna, his brother John Joseph McKenna, and his niece Caitlin Maureen McKenna. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Joseph McKenna, his sister-in-law, Debra Alba McKenna, and his parents.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell, GA to be followed by a gathering at the home of Andrea and John Bray, 323 Blanton Road, NW in Atlanta, GA.
In memory, donations may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation: www.parkinson.org.

So sorry to hear of Pete´s passing.

I enjoyed our neighborly and professional times in Martins Landing and @ Canon. It was fun to occasionally car pool with Pete to CUSA.

Pete was a mensch.

RIP Pete..

Pete and I were tennis partners only once, but it is one of my favorite tennis memories. It was obvious from the beginning that we were outgunned. We did lose the match, but we made them work for the win. It felt like Pete and I had played together for years. Comfortable and loads of fun.

I will remember Pete as always being happy and bringing cheerfulness to every occasion.

Pat, I will keep you, Pete, and your family in my prayers.

Pete and Pat have been our treasured friends and travel buddies for more than twenty years. Ken and I sought out every chance to share adventures, from their visits to our home in Asheville, trips to Banner Elk and hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway, to Fripp Island and Charleston, we enjoyed it all so much.

Our Irish connection was another bond, as well as our childhood days in Brooklyn and New Jersey. We spoke with Pete on the phone a few weeks ago and shared a laugh about a favorite old movie, 'My Cousin Vinnie'. We recalled how they would refer to the 'Yoots' (youths) and laughed about Joe's Pesci's hilarious 'New Yawk' lawyer stuck in Alabama. I reminded him how much we both loved him, which will always be true. Pete told me that he loved us too, words to hold close to my heart, always. His memory will always be a blessing.

Ken Roth Seventy years. I met Pete along with my younger brother Fred when the family moved from Brooklyn to Dumont, NJ. At 11 years of age Pete;s personality was formed. It was "let's see what we can get away with" And when questioned his answer was "we had no guidance". In retirement Anne and I restarted the adventure all over again with Pat and Pete. Being together was more important than what we did.

Pete had a 25 letter alphabet. Missing was the letter I. It was always we or us as he was never one to call attention to himself.

Our friendship! Really two words both a life long buddy and a journey. With Pete I could not have asked for more.

Four of us tennis buddies were going down to Florida one Spring to try our hand at catching some big Florida bass. Pete wasn´t really a fisherman, but he did find a dilapidated old spinning rod in his garage, and after wiping off the cobwebs he presented that and a couple of little spinner baits as his equipment for the trip. Then, on our first day on the lake, Pete declared that he planned to catch a crappie and a pickerel. Now, throwing a treble-hooked lure into the weed beds and lily pads of a Florida lake is not just foolhardy, it´s simply impossible. So, after telling Pete how ridiculous that goal was, we humored him and went about our business as serious, expert fishermen. The experts didn't catch a single largemouth bass that day, but Pete, quietly and with no fanfare, caught . . . . a crappie and a pickerel! That was thirty years ago, and I have never figured out how Pete did it, but I'll never stop wondering . . . and smiling at my memories of Pete. Rest in peace forever, my dear friend.

So glad we met Pete when he and Pat visited years ago. My cousin Pat was someone I looked up to when we lived next door. I know Pete had excellent care by her. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I met Pete at a local tennis club when I moved to Atlanta. We were a couple of learners on a beginning level tennis team. He was among my best friends for almost 40 years.

Pete was many things, but "thrifty" was his trademark. However, people probably don´t know how generous he was. For example, he once told me about a great closeout deal he got on a bunch of portable space heaters. I asked him what he planned to do with them. He replied, "I´m going to give them to the homeless." I replied, "Where are they going to plug them in?" I still remember the look on his face. Nevertheless, as resourceful as ever, he found several charitable uses for them.

I had the privilege of seeing him three days before he passed. I held his hand and couldn´t tell if he could hear or understand me. Now I think of all the things that should have been said. I hope he can hear me now.

Pete was a good friend and business cohort at Canon. We enjoyed many fun, competitive tennis matches. I remember him telling me that on long trips, he would get out of the car, go on a run to stretch his legs and then get back on the road. Pete taught me how to get the highest quality of life for each dollar earned. We will always be grateful for his friendship. Rest in Peace my friend. Jack and Janet Latone

Pete and Pat were with me on Charleston SC when we went to a barbecue restaurant for dinner. Good food, but no alcohol. Unacceptable to Pete. He drank his soda, (or somehow disposed of it), He took the cup to his car and filled it with wine, brought it back to enjoy his meal. I also remember his penchant for also securing the best deal on a hotel room or car rental.
