Peter Miner Obituary

Colonel Peter Sutton Miner (USAF Ret.) died at home on August 9, 2025, of Bronchiectasis. He was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on June 21, 1944, to Louisa Sutton Miner and Robert Francis Miner.

In childhood he was fascinated with airplanes. Early, he set sights on attending the Air Force Academy and in 1961 entered the Class of 1965. After graduation he reported to Flight Training School in Selma, Alabama and subsequently C130 Flight instruction. For eight years he was wheels up, delivering cargo worldwide, participating in tactical airlift missions in Vietnam, and flying reconnaissance flights in Asia. He accumulated over 4,000 flight hours and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1973, his “good stick” abilities earned him a slot in the Air Force Test Pilot School, Class 74-A at Edwards AFB. Regrettably, midway through, Pete developed Type 1 Diabetes and was medically grounded, clipping his wings (his words).

Thereafter Pete supported those who flew as a Maintenance Officer and Squadron Commander, USAF’s Director of Metrology, and the DCM of the 35th TAC Fighter Wing. When not a “maintainer,” Pete served tours at the Pentagon, at Cameron Station, VA, and as the last F-4 Systems Program Manager at Hill AFB, Utah.

After his retirement from the Air Force in 1992, Pete obtained an MS in Rehabilitation from Utah State University and went to work for the Utah Center for Assistive Technology. He became its director, and retired in 2008.

Once retired, Pete honed his woodworking skills and excelled at wood turning where his artistic abilities shone. He continued his support of Daedalians, an national organization for military aviators.

He was Pioneer Chapter’s Flight Captain for 10 years.

Peter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Grace, a daughter Laura Ann Williams and husband Garlin (Antelope, CA) and two grandsons, Kevin Sparks and Airman Garlin Williams.

The family thanks the staff and volunteers of Community Nursing Service for their extraordinary service and support and suggests a donation to this worthy nonprofit in lieu of flowers.

A gathering with family will be held Monday August 18, 2025 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah.

Interment will be held at a later date at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
