Peter Francis Sablich passed away peacefully at his home on March 27, 2024. Born in Chicago in 1950 to loving parents Frank and Eleanor, Pete spent his life building, nurturing, and celebrating friendships and family ties. He was a proud alum of De La Salle Institute (or, "The D" as he called it anytime he met a fellow South-Sider) and North Central College.
Pete began a long and fulfilling career in finance in 1968 at Continental Bank. While at Continental, he starred on the bank's 16-inch softball team, forged many lifelong friendships, and met his lifelong partner, Mary Kay Scanlan.
Married in 1976, Pete and Mary Kay moved to Naperville where they raised their three children, Peter, Patrick, and Elizabeth. They built many cherished traditions over the years, perhaps none more special than their annual Christmas Eve dinner downtown. An occasion that the whole family looked forward to each year, the evening was marked by laughter, joy, and reflection. Over the course of 25+ years, the family's window table at Carmine's expanded, making room for friends, spouses, and eventually, children. The most memorable outings ended with a Christmas Eve snowfall, but regardless of the weather, all years concluded with overwhelming gratitude for the time spent together and for the enduring magic of Christmas.
Pete passed his passion for Chicago sports-and for the White Sox in particular-to his children, who loved going to games with their dad any chance they got. Pete also enjoyed taking in games with his niece, nephew, and relatives. Pete always found great joy and friendship on the golf course, a passion he had even more time for following his retirement.
But nothing in the world made Pete happier than spending time with his wife, his children and their spouses (Jackie, Meaghan, and Brian), and his seven grandchildren (Claire, Sam, Emmett, Noah, Jack, Rory, and Alexandra). The role of "Pop" was one that Pete was born to play, and one that he threw his whole heart into. His family is forever grateful.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Phyllis and his brother Rick. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the De La Salle Institute or the Chicago White Sox Charities.
