Peter Nicholas Thornton, of Pembroke, Virginia a man known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his passions, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, in Pearisburg, VA. Born on February 25, 1951, in New York, Peter's life was one marked by service, love, and the simple joys that paint the everyday with shades of contentment.

Peter's early years in New York laid a strong foundation for the man he would become. The son of the late Peter Thornton and Mary Ann Komtakoff Thornton, he grew up alongside four brothers, Chris, Lance, Johnny, and Mike Thornton, all of whom preceded him in death. The bond of brotherhood instilled in him the values of camaraderie and resilience.

Upon completing his education, Peter felt a profound call to serve his country. He enlisted in the Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant E5. His service was distinguished by the receipt of the Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. His time in the military was not just about duty; it was about the personal growth and leadership he exhibited, particularly during his tenure as a Drill Sergeant, where he shaped the lives of young soldiers with a firm yet compassionate hand. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Peter transitioned to civilian life with the same commitment to excellence that had marked his military career. He joined the team at Moog, where he was involved in production. His work ethic and dedication to his role were evident to all who worked alongside him.

Peter found love with his dear wife, Faye Jones Thornton, and together they built a life rich with laughter and shared dreams. Their family grew to include a son, Chris Thornton, and daughters, Renee Roop (married to Nathan) and Eva Thornton. Peter's role as a father was one of his greatest sources of pride and joy. He instilled in his children the importance of integrity, hard work, and the value of a good fishing trip to clear one's mind. The joy of family extended to his cherished grandchildren, Christopher James Thornton, Jacob Thornton, Stella Roop, and Lucy Roop, and he was overjoyed to witness the birth of his great-grandchildren, Kimberly Thornton, Maxine Thornton, and Christopher James Thornton, Jr. Each of them brought a sparkle to his eye and an ever-widening smile to his face.

Peter's interests were a reflection of the man he was-simple, yet deeply fulfilling. His love for fishing was more than a hobby; it was a passion that allowed him moments of tranquility and reflection. He also had a playful side, which was evident in his love for the lottery. Peter enjoyed the thrill of possibility and the excitement that came with each ticket he purchased.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, December 1, 2025 at 10:00 AM in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery Dublin, Virginia with Pastor Gary Poff officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the United States Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 58. A guestbook is available to send condolences to the family by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com. The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to serve the Thornton family.
