Philip (Phil) Haskell Jr., age 94, of Dunnellon, Florida, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 5, 2026. He passed away peacefully at home.
Phil was born on September 2, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, to Philip Sr. and Ruth Haskell. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After serving in the U.S. Army in Alaska, he began his professional career as an accountant with Shell Oil Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He later worked as General Manager for Kroger.
Living in Lakewood, Ohio, Phil met his wife Doris Schroeter of Hamburg, Germany. They married in 1957 and raised three sons: Mark, John, and Robert. In the mid-1970's the family came to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Answering a calling to use his entrepreneurial talents in service to the Lord, Phil and Doris opened a faith based Christian bookstore in Brunswick and later a second one in nearby Cleveland, Ohio. In 1984, Doris passed away.
Phil remarried in 1986 to Sigrid Behn of Hamburg, Germany, a cousin of Doris. They resided in Valley City, Ohio, where Phil became a devoted stepfather to Sigrid's sons Marco and Mathias. Phil retired at the end of 1999 from the bookstores, bought a motorhome, and he and Sigrid started traveling. They moved to Rainbow Springs in Dunnellon, Florida, in 2003 and enjoyed retirement.
Phil will be fondly remembered for his love of family and friends, his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, and his sharp, analytical mind. He became a Silver Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League and participated in tournaments. He also had a great love for golf and gardening.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Sr. and Ruth; his first wife Doris; his sister-in-law Gisela Kelley; and his uncle Schuyler Haskell.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sigrid; sons Mark (Debbie); John (Sheila); Robert (Sandra); Marco; Mathias (Rachael); brother-in-law George Kelley; sisters-in-law Hanna (Rolf) Thoemen and Ursula Niemann of Hamburg, Germany; nieces and nephews, along with many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 24, 2026, at 11 am at First Baptist Church of Dunnellon, Florida.
