Philip Roberto Calandra passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024, at the age of 90. Philip was born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Victor and Frances (Tarmino) Calandra. He was the dear husband of the late Judith Calanda and the loving father of Victor Calandra, Philip Calandra, and Sonny Calandra. He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Nicole and Nicolas.
Philip was a man of unwavering dedication, known for his strong work ethic and his commitment to providing for his family. His sense of duty led him to proudly serve his country as a Marine. His service extended to the Korean War, where he demonstrated bravery and valor. When he wasn't working, he hit the ring to demonstrate his skilled talents as a boxer against his fellow comrades.
Beyond his military career, Philip was a man of many talents. He graduated from the Dale Carnegie Course for Leadership Training and Sales in 1976. The work in this course prepared him for a lifetime of business ownership. Philip owned a restaurant hood cleaning business as well as a chimney cleaning business and was a coffee salesman. He had a passion for baking, which led him to become the owner of a bakery. Additionally, he owned the well-respected seafood market in Dearborn called The Fish Market, where he shared his love for quality food with the community. Philip's kitchen was a place of warmth and hospitality, where he delighted in preparing meals for his loved ones. His spaghetti sauce recipe was a closely guarded secret, a testament to his culinary prowess and his love for sharing meals with family and friends.
Philip's larger-than-life personality endeared him to all who knew him. He possessed a natural gift for storytelling, captivating audiences with his tales. His presence brought joy and laughter wherever he went, and he leaves behind cherished memories that will be forever treasured.
In the hearts of those who knew him, Philip leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private cremation will take place in the care of Solosy Funeral Home and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
