Philip Grashoff Obituary
Philip A. Grashoff Jr. (Flip) was born on January 30, 1944 in Sanford, Florida to Philip and Lois Grashoff. His family moved to Michigan where he graduated from University of Detroit Jesuit High School in 1962. He attended the University of Michigan where he met his best friend and love for life, Barbara Gendich, and graduated in 1966. Phil and Barbara were married on July 16, 1966, were blessed with three daughters and shared over fifty-eight years of marriage. Phil served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army, Ordnance Corp. After his discharge in 1969, he attended Wayne State University Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctor Cum Laude in 1972.
Most important to Phil was his family. He was husband to Barbara, father to "his girls", Meridith Cannon (Michael), Ashley Karlstrom (Ryan), and Lauren Davis (Michael). He was Papa to grandson Christopher Cannon and granddaughters Helena Cannon and Riley Davis. Time spent with his family was the joy of Phil's life, whether on vacations, holidays, or ordinary family gatherings. At an early age he learned to play golf as a member of Meadowbrook Country Club and that became a life passion. He also enjoyed fly fishing and skiing, especially in Colorado.
Phil was passionate about the practice of law. He specialized in environmental law and litigation throughout most of his career. Although he was the recipient of many accolades, he was particularly proud of being chosen by his peers as a "Best Lawyers in the United States". Phil served on various local, state and federal bar association environmental committees. He was Chairperson of the Michigan Bar Association's Environmental Law Section. He also served on the Oakland County, Detroit, and Grand Rapids Bar Associations. He practiced in the State of Michigan Federal courts and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. He was particularly proud that many of his clients relied upon him for legal advice for over 30 years and some became close friends.
Phil was president of the Michigan Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta alumni board, Chairman of the University of Michigan Department of Urology Friends Committee, a member of the U of D Jesuit High School alumni advisory board, Vice Chairperson of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of directors of Stonycroft Hills Club.
