Philip Joseph Hankey passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 9, 2025. He was born on January 13, 1956, in Kittanning, Pennsylvania.
Phil dedicated 37 years of his career to the Virginia State Lottery. Outside of work, he was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and he was happiest when surrounded by his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Josephas Benjamin Hankey, and his two brothers, Barry Edward Hankey and Benjamin Jon Hankey. He is survived by his mother, Donna Jean Hankey, and by the love of his life, Trish Ann Hankey, with whom he shared 23 wonderful years of marriage.
Phil is also survived by his children: Angela Dawn Boyd (Abby, Sydney, Nicholas, Reece and River), Philip Bradley Hankey (Callie), Matthew Ryan Hankey (Katherine; Aiden and Selah), Ashley Renee Williams (Jake; Gavin, Beckett, Mya, and Cayson), and Seth Neal Counts (Calley; Jacob, Kannon, Konley, Noah, and Amelia).
On Saturday, August 16, 2025, the family will gather at Tharp Funeral Home, 320 North Bridge St. Bedford, VA 24523, with family welcome to arrive at 2:30 p.m. The public viewing will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Phil will be forever loved and deeply missed but never forgotten. All who knew him will carry a piece of him wherever they go, in their lives, in their stories, and in the love they share with others. Cheers.
