Philip John McAfee, age 81 of Erie, Pa, formerly Johnstown, PA., passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024. He was born in Johnstown on May 24, 1943, a son of the late John Philip and Mary McCreary McAfee. He was a graduate of Westmont Hilltop Senior High School and Penn Technical – Pittsburgh and worked for General Electric and AMSCO/Steris until his retirement in 2011. Philip was a member of Luther Memorial Church, a lifelong member of the NRA, memberships in the GE Quarter Century Club, Lawrence Lodge-Keystone Perry, Scottish Rite Valley of Erie and Northwest Maple Association. Philip was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and he enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, bowling; having bowled several 300 games, cooking, reading, woodworking, volunteering, and was a boy scout leader when he resided in Virginia. He made maple syrup and was manager of NW Maple at the PA farm show for many years. Philip prepared & served ‘Thanksgiving feasts” at Luther Memorial Academy for over 10 years.
In addition to his parents, Philip was preceded in death by his grandson Andrew Philip Spekhart, his brother-in-law Donald Shaner, Sr. and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Philip is survived by his wife Sally Shaner McAfee and his children: Lori Shifflett (Reid) of VA, Edith Gustason (Thomas) of AZ and Kelli Thornhill of VA., his sister Esther Gelles (Charles) of Johnstown, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank all his doctors, nurses and caretakers during his illness, and all his friends for their cards, calls and visits.
Friends may call at Burton Quinn-Scott Downtown, 602 W 10th St. Erie PA Friday, June 7, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends are invited to attend his service Saturday, June 8, at 10:00 a.m. at Luther Memorial Church, 225 W 10th St, Erie, PA 16501.
