Philip Mead Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Willwerscheid Funeral Home & Cremation Service - West-Heights Chapel on Oct. 11, 2025.
Philip Harry "Duke" Mead, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, teacher, and activist left this world peacefully on 2 October 2025, surrounded by family at 80 years old. He is survived by his wife, Joanna, siblings Kris and Brad of Arizona, children Steven, Laura, Aimee, and Abe, and their respective spouses and children.
Phil was born on 22 March 1945 in Minneapolis, MN to parents Harry and Esther Mead. An educator who worked for more than 25 years in Saint Paul Public Schools, Phil was a voracious reader and an avid sports fan. Due to his love of watching the news and reading the newspaper daily, he was always up on current events. He was known for his love of sarcasm and an extensive sneaker and jersey collection. That mischievous smile of his will always be remembered by those that knew him best.
A funeral service to celebrate Phil will be held at St Stephen's Lutheran Church located at 1575 Carlton Street, West Saint Paul, MN 55118 on 17 October 2025. Visitation at 10am, service at 11am, with food and fellowship following the service. Family and friends are invited to attend to celebrate his life and share joyful remembrances.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Phil's memory to the ACLU or the Equal Justice Institute, as the cause of civil rights was one close to his heart.

To the Mead family, my deepest condolences. Mr Mead was special to many students at St. Paul Central HS.

He was a staunch educator and favorite teacher of many. He was the first teacher to introduce me to the Eyes on the Prize documentary. I was fortunate to work with him as a student to get the administration to stand up a Black History class as an alternative to US History.

I recall Mr Mead being clever with his "comebacks" with students and his love for basketball. He was one of a kind.

Mr. Mead was one of my favorite teachers. He inspired me to learn by reading multiple sources from different perspectives to challenge my thinking.

The seeds that he planted at Central greatly assisted me in undergrad, grad school, and life.

RIP Mr. Mead

Goodbye to my dear friend Phil Mead. He was a very special person who I had the pleasure to encounter in my life. I was his student teacher at Central where he taught me the essentials of being a good teacher first to care and then to know that the knowledge that we give them is sometimes all that they get . He inspired me to work every day to work to be the best teacher that I could be . Phil inspired many students to be their best including Melvin Carter the current mayor of Saint Paul and the current principal of Saint Paul Central. I loved our adventures in Mississippi and Washington DC
I could always count on him to be a loyal friend and mentor. In short Phil was one of those people that inspired me that helped me to lay the foundation of my professional and personal life.
Phil , I will always think of you with fondness and reverence. Goodbye my friend until we meet again again
