Philip Roxas, 73 of
Forked River, NJ, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Much beloved husband, father, uncle, fur papa and friend, Phil was known for his exceptional musical talents, humor, charisma, good hearted nature and sunlit spirit.
Born into a musically talented family on March 14, 1951, he was raised in Newark NJ, by Mary (nee Jachimowicz) and Tirso Roxas and mentored by his beloved brothers Steven and Victor. There he attended Arts High, where his love for music flourished, playing both the tuba and guitar. Upon graduation he joined the US Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic until his honorable discharge.
Phil dedicated 35 years of service to the railroad industry with NJ Transit, as a train conductor. He committed himself to his job with unwavering dedication and professionalism. This is where he met the love of his life and soulmate, Athena Roxas (nee Bais). She caught his eye while collecting tickets. After a few morning trips into the city, he finally made his move, delaying the train at Middletown station so he could grab her a coffee and finally ask her on a date.
An amazing guitar player and musician, Phil's voice and fingers resonated with all who had the privilege of hearing him play. He encouraged and inspired his children to follow along in his footsteps becoming musicians themselves. Throughout his life, he performed with many talented musicians in various venues all across the state. However in the most recent years he found the most joy and fulfilment playing along side his daughter, Cassia, with Cassia's Clay, Daddy Daughter Duo and Frog Jam Band.
A master chef in the kitchen, Phil loved whipping up his favorites, like his infamous omelets, crab legs, pot roast and meatballs for anyone who craved his special dishes. His soul brought so much joy to countless numbers of hearts.
Phil was an avid Mets fan and had a passion for softball ever since he was a little boy playing on different leagues in Newark. His passion continued throughout his life playing on many ball fields, his favorite being Heckschire Ballfield in Central Park. During his retirement and while living in Seabreeze at Lacey community in Forked River, he cofounded their softball team and spent many summer days enjoying the camaraderie of his neighbors and teammates.
An avid fisherman and boater, Phil loved to spend time in the Florida Keys casting and catching fish. He always took the opportunity to bring a fishing pole with him on any vacation with the hopes of throwing in a line. His dream had always been to travel the Great Loop by boat and eventually retire in the Keys.
Beyond his professional achievements, Phil's greatest legacy lies in his role as a devoted family man. He was a pillar of strength, support and love for his children, cherished husband to his wife Athena and a caring fur papa to his most special puppy and sidekick, Maddie. His presence brought love and laughter to all that were in his company, with his mischievous jokes, humor and infectious smile.
Phil will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Athena Roxas, his loving children, Cassia Roxas Seems, her husband Peter Seems, Jr., sons Robert Eelman and Justin Roxas, and grandchildren, Justin Roxas Jr. and Cecilia Roxas. Though he may be gone, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his strength, kindness, talent, and unwavering love.
