Marengo-Philip Weiss was born on May 9, 1941, in Sumner, Iowa, the son of Rev. Edmund and Edna (Ropte) Weiss. He was raised in rural Victor, attended Parochial School, and graduated from HLV High School. Following high school, Phil moved to St. Louis to attend Rankin Trade School.

On September 7, 1963, he was united in marriage to Janice Kay Schumacher at the Freeburg United Church of Christ in Freeburg, Illinois. The couple initially settled in Hiawatha before making their home in Marengo in 1968.

Phil worked at Pella Windows, owned and operated his own construction business, and later was employed at Amana Refrigeration until his retirement in 2010. A skilled craftsman, Phil took great pride in woodworking. He built homes, completed projects in the Iowa County Courthouse, and was in the process of remodeling his own home. Beyond his work, he found joy in spending time with his family and neighbors.

Phil is survived by his son, Herbert (Carolyn) Weiss of Kalona; two grandchildren, Zachariah (Mary) Weiss of Kalona and Lauryn Weiss of Riverside; and three great-granddaughters, Eleanor, Adaline, and Rosemary. He is also survived by two brothers, Martin (Patricia) Weiss of Omaha and James Weiss of Amana. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Hazel; his wife, Janice; special friend, Anita Bosler; and two brothers, Andrew and David-in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. Burial will take place Friday at Mascoutah Cemetery in Illinois. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 3, 2025 at Powell Funeral Home in Marengo. A general memorial fund has been established.
