Phillip Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chandler Funeral Home - Ellettsville Chapel on Jan. 9, 2026.
Phillip "PJ" Jeremy Barnes, 49, passed away on January 7th, 2026, in Bloomington, Indiana surrounded by his loving family.
PJ was born on October 23rd, 1976, in Bloomington, IN, to Reva and Andy Barnes. In 2000, PJ married his best friend, Amy Renee Cross, and together they had three children, Titus, Eve, and Timothy "Louie". They are also proud grandparents to one grandson, Hudson, whom PJ doted on since his birth in 2023.
PJ enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved sharing his skill with his wife, children and parents. He was known for his silly personality and sense of humor. He never met a stranger and caught so many off guard with quips like, "Glad you got to see me" and "Thanks for coming in" (to the waitress at any restaurant). He had a way with kids of all ages and impacted the lives of many young people.
PJ spent his last few years building and enjoying their family's dream home, The Barnestead. The renovated 100 year old barn was beautifully crafted into a cozy farm home, complete with deer stands, ample parking for multiple boats, trucks, ATVs and all the fishing and hunting gear a man could EVER need.
PJ is survived by his wife, Amy Barnes; his children, Titus, Eve and Louie; his parents Reva and Andy Barnes; his brother, Ross Barnes, and his grandson, Hudson. He also leaves behind an endless supply of fishing and hunting gear, many funny t-shirts, and his beloved bass boat in which he spent many hours with his family and long time fishing buddy, Dan Deckard.
PJ will be remembered as a loving husband, son, father, pappy, friend and mentor.
A celebration of PJ's life will be held on January 11th, 2026, at Ellettsville Christian Church at 2:00 p.m with a meal for family following at 3:00. PJ wasn't much for formal wear, please feel free to attend in a funny t-shirt and casual clothing.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Owen Valley Fishing Club, in care of Owen Valley High School, 622 IN-46, Spencer, Indiana 47460.
