Phillip "Phil" C. Hayenga, age 80, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. He was born in Adaline, IL on March 13, 1943 the son of Carl and Florence (Myers) Hayenga. Phil graduated from Byron High School Class of 1961. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Donna Miller. He worked for many years as a machinist for J.L. Clark. Phil enjoyed cars; whether it was collecting antique vehicles or building motors. He also liked fishing and woodworking in his spare time. Phil was someone you enjoyed being around and you could count on to respond with a witty comment. The most important thing in his life was the family he built with Donna. He was loving, dedicated, and proud father and grandfather. He is survived and missed by his wife, Donna of Byron; children, Jeff (Donna) Hayenga of Ashville, NC, and Laura (Jeff) Kilmer of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Nathan Hayenga, Jordan (Will) Ashby, Ally Hayenga, and Payton (Fiancé Zach Rollins) Kilmer; great grandson, Liam Ashby; sister, Sharon (Tom) Howard; and uncle, Don Myers. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Shirley. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Serenity Hospice for their wonderful care of Phil. Per his request no services are being held at this time. Memorials may be directed to the family to be split amongst charities that meant the most to him.

Phil has been a wealth of knowledge and such a kind soul, so generous with his time and has been such a great teacher. I´ve learned so much about drag racing and engine building from him. I saw him in his garage working on nostalgia super stock race cars and myself and a good friend of mine decided to stop by and introduce ourselves, I saw his last name on the mailbox and had no idea of how to pronounce it "hey en ja?" I said to my friend, and he jokingly said, "hey ninja" so from that point on our nick name for him was "The Ninja" and he earned that name with the Ninja like precision he used in his machining and attention to detail building Mopar big blocks. He has helped my dad and me so much over the years, his friendly personality and kindness will be missed.
