Phillip Jaquith Obituary

Phillip Harold "Jake" Jaquith, a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully from natural causes on January 9, 2026. He was born on December 7, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Clifford and May Jaquith.

Jake proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1952, stationed at Sandia Base near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following his military service, he pursued higher education and earned a master's degree in Forestry from the University of Minnesota, beginning a lifelong commitment to the land he loved.

In 1957, Jake began his career with the U.S. Forest Service, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. His career took him to many remarkable places, but two assignments held a special place in his heart: serving as District Ranger at Red River on the Nez Perce National Forest in Idaho, and later as District Ranger on the Custer National Forest in Red Lodge, Montana.

An outdoorsman at heart, Jake loved hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping, and he delighted in sharing these passions with his family. He led them on countless adventures and created memories that will be cherished for generations. Known for his marvelous imagination, Jake was a gifted storyteller, famous among his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for his unforgettable "imagination stories."

Jake was an active member of the Community Church in Red Lodge and served his community through his time on the Red Lodge City Council. He also greatly valued his membership in the Inquiry Club, where he formed many lifelong friendships.

Jake is survived by his sister, Janice Culberson; sisters-in-law, Sarah Grafe and Nan Banks; his children, Martha Jaquith and her husband Rich Raines, Paul Jaquith and his wife Keiko, Joe Jaquith and his wife Kayla, and Kari Swanson and her husband Doug; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

I had the sincere pleasure of knowing Jake for over thirty-years. He always had time to help, advise, and suggest solutions. Walking and hiking with him out on places like the Rosebud taught me much about the land where we live. And the way he expressed that knowledge, taught me even more about his character and patience. He was a friend, he was kind, and most of all, Phil Jaquith was a good man.
