Phillip John Sumner, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in May 2025 at the age of 90. Born on March 7, 1935, in Highland Park, Michigan, Phillip was the cherished son of the late Kenneth V. Sumner and Elizabeth (Dunnigan).
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Phillip served his country with honor and integrity. Following his service, he earned an associate degree from Wayne State University and went on to work as a Driver Salesman in the ice cream industry-a career that perfectly matched his warm, generous spirit.
To the many children in his neighborhood, Mr. Sumner was more than a father-he was a local legend, known fondly as the "neighborhood dad" who always kept his home stocked with every imaginable flavor of ice cream. His door was always open, his freezer always full, and his heart always generous.
Beloved husband of Jeannine (DeBusk) of 70 years. They were married on September 11, 1954.
Phillip was a devoted father to Michael, Michelle, Paul, and the late Phillip. He was also a loving brother to Bill and Jean. Also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His greatest joy came from time spent with his family, and his legacy will be one of kindness, laughter, and unconditional love.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi, with military honors to follow in tribute to his service. Interment will take place at the same location.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home, Novi.
Phillip's gentle presence and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
