Phyllis Jean Barts, 84, of Sheboygan, went to be with the Lord on January 25, 2024. Phyllis was born in Ord, Nebraska on January 17, 1940 to the late Frank and Louise (Berends) Lilienthal. She earned her bachelor’s degree in teaching from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois. On June 19, 1971, she was united in marriage to James Barts at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sheboygan. She was a beloved teacher at St. Paul’s Lutheran School for 25 years. Following retirement, Phyllis continued to dedicate her time and talents as a volunteer with Partners in Reading, a program that helps children discover the joys of books.
Phyllis loved to travel. She and James traveled to many places during their marriage, including Savannah, Georgia, and Boston, Massachusetts just to name a few. Above all, she adored her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren. They will always remember grandma’s legendary spaghetti and waffles.
Phyllis is survived by her two children, Jennifer Barts of Minnesota and Scot (Tracy) Barts of Sheboygan; five grandchildren, Abigail, Kaitlyn, Milena, Connor, and Annaliese; brother Dave (Carla) Lilienthal, sister Lynell Einsphar (John) and other family and friends.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband James Barts, and sisters Shirley Saba and Kathy Mullins.
A funeral service for Phyllis will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1121 Georgia Ave., Sheboygan, with Pastor Patrick Niles officiating. The family will greet visitors on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at church, from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. A private burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the outstanding staff at Rocky Knoll Health Care Center and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for all the comfort and support given to Phyllis.
