In loving memory and thanksgiving for the life of Phyllis Gonterman Clark (February 5, 1927 – February10, 2026)

We thank God for the life of Phyllis Gonterman Clark, who died and entered the church triumphant on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Phyllis Clark was born in 1927 in Hart County, KY to devoted parents, the late Judge William L. and Mayme Woodring Gonterman. She was the sixth of seven sisters, born into a family where education, faith and community values were deeply ingrained. Her father, a county judge, and both parents, schoolteachers, instilled in her a love for learning and a strong sense of family.

Phyllis married Charles Wallace Clark on February 7, 1948 in Lexington, KY, and together they celebrated 44 years of marriage. Their union blessed them with five children, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Family and friendships were at the core of Phyllis's life, and she cherished the moments spent with them.

Her journey took her from her roots in Kentucky to various places that became homes over the years. She lived in Lexington, KY, until 1971, then moved to Orlando, FL, until 2005, and finally settled in Fort Mill and Tega Cay, SC.

Phyllis dedicated 40 years of her life to the nursing profession, training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, KY. She served in the Nursing Cadet Corp. in WWII. Her compassionate care touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the community.

In addition to her professional career, Phyllis found joy in serving others. For many years, she volunteered at her church and actively participated as an election worker. Her commitment to faith, family, and community was unwavering.

Phyllis had a zest for life and a range of interests that enriched her journey. From cultivating African Violets and judging them in shows to playing tennis until the age of 78, she embraced life's various facets.

Her love for reading, playing bridge, watching sports (especially cheering for the University of Kentucky Wildcats), traveling with her sister, Becky, across the US, Canada, and Europe, and enjoying weekend getaways with her daughters and daughter-in-law added color to her vibrant life.

Phyllis Clark will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the lasting impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and enduring friendships. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband (Charlie), and five sisters, Edith Moran, Elenor Gonterman, Wynona Flaherty, Ruth Blakey, and Rebecca Friend. She is survived by her children Susan Popp (Ron), Karen Lenz (Don), Steven Clark (Annmarie), Janet Sims (Kevin), and Cathy Worrall (Tom), their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Lynn Jensen, and many nieces and nephews.

A family visitation is scheduled Wednesday, March 4 from 4-6 pm at Palmetto Funeral Home, Fort Mill.  A celebration of Phyllis's life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, Fort Mill, SC Thursday, March 5 at 1pm, reception to follow.

For those wishing to send memorial gifts, please consider a donation to Grace Presbyterian Church Music Ministries Program or Susan G. Komen Foundation in Phyllis's honor.
