Phyllis J. (Wallace) Cowsert, a treasured soul and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at the blessed age of 95 in Hammond, Indiana. Her life's commencement in South Bend, Indiana on March 14, 1930, paved the way for a journey filled with love, dedication, and the joy of simple pleasures.
Phyllis was the cornerstone of her family, marrying the love of her life, Jack Cowsert, in South Bend on April 30, 1972. Their union was a source of strength and happiness until Jack's passing on March 2, 1997. She was the cherished daughter of the late Frank Wallace and Bessie (Burkett) Wallace, and she bore the memory of her late siblings Linda Cowsert, Wayne, George, and Walter Wallace with grace and fondness.
The lineage of Phyllis is a testament to her loving nature, survived by her devoted children, Patricia (Steven) Parker, Pamla (Glenn) Derby, Karen (Rick) Horvath, and Kevin Cowsert. Her legacy flourished through 14 adoring grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 27 great-great-grandchildren who all basked in the warmth of her affection.
Mishawaka High School's class of 1949 boasted Phyllis as a proud graduate, after which she dedicated over 25 years of service at Uniroyal Ball Band. Her commitment to her work was matched by her involvement in the community, making her a well-respected figure among peers and colleagues alike.
Phyllis's zest for life was evident in her diverse interests. A proficient seamstress, she created beautiful pieces that were as practical as they were cherished. She loved to cast a rod and go fishing. The assembly of jigsaw puzzles provided her with hours of contemplation and achievement, while her gardening skills ensured her family never lacked the beauty of nature or the taste of fresh produce.
Above all, the epicenter of Phyllis's world was her family. The nurturing love for her grandchildren knew no bounds, as she instilled in them the values of kindness, determination, and the importance of family ties. Ice cream outings with Phyllis were moments of pure joy, as was savoring her famous vegetable soup, a recipe that warmed hearts as much as it did bellies.

A time to visit with the family will occur on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 3-7 p.m. A service will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, starting at 11 a.m. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service beginning. All being held at Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel 3910 N. Main St. Mishawaka, IN 46545. Procession to Chapel Hill Memorial Garden will immediately follow the service to take Phyllis to her final resting place. Pastor Wyatt Smith will officiate the services.

Memorial Contribution may be made in Phyllis's name to Hospice of Calumet, 600 Superior Ave. Munster, IN 46321.
