Phyllis Ann Ferrel, 77, of Iowa City, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at her home with family by her side.
Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
Phyllis was born and raised within 25 miles of Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph Nicholas and Margaret Josephine "Josi" "Dode" McCabe Scheetz. She always referred to herself as a "farm girl" as she grew up on a farm near Cosgrove, Iowa and was immensely proud of that. She graduated from Regina High School in 1966.
She met Michael Craig Ferrel, her high school sweetheart, and the love of her life, in 1963 working at Benner's grocery store in Iowa City. Phyllis and Michael were married on December 17, 1966 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. A son and daughter completed their family.
Phyllis worked 35 years in the Social Services field as a Social Service Coordinator. Throughout all these years, Phyllis enjoyed getting to know all her clients, her co-workers and staff from other Social Service Agencies. She was a people person and always advocated to help others.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and volunteering for many local agencies and her church. Phyllis was a co-leader in her daughter's Girl's Scout Troop in the 1970s and there were always wonderful stories to share. She also enjoyed attending the Regina High School football games when their son played for the Regals during the 1980s. Most of all, Phyllis enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren who would bring a big smile to her face.
Phyllis loved and found peace with many pets that she and Mike cared for over the years. Their puppy girl Maddie was the last pet to share their lives with. She had a special place in her heart for her God, family, friends, animals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 58 years Michael Ferrel; children William "Bill" (Patty) Ferrel of Aledo, TX and Michele (Dave) Bogs of North Liberty, IA; grandchildren Evan Ferrel, Maggie (Michael) McClelen and Griffin Bogs, one great- grandchild Olivia Ruth McClelen and numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Margaret Scheetz, sisters Marilyn Maher and Janice Kinney and brothers-in-law Tom Maher and Larry Kinney.
Online condolences and memories may be shared on Phyllis's Tribute Wall.
