Phyllis (Vanoss) Hitchins, 79, of Hanover died Saturday, March 25, 2023, peacefully with family by her side at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. Daughter of the late Irvin Vanoss and Phyllis (Westgate) O'Brien, she was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 18, 1943. She graduated from Winters Joint Union High School in 1962.
Phyllis lived in Duxbury for many years where she raised her 4 children. She was employed at Bay Path Nursing Home in Duxbury for over 20 years in various roles including food service manager. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, animals, and spending time with family and friends. Her biggest passion was her grandchildren whom she loved immensely. She enjoyed a year living in Gearhart, Oregon with her daughter, enjoying her oldest grandson's sporting events and activities.
Phyllis is predeceased by her sister Erin O'Brien. She is survived by her sister Penny Boeck and her husband Steve Boeck of California; her daughter Marjorie Leary and her partner Peter Kilfoyle of Denver, Colorado; 3 sons, John Hitchins and his partner Michelle Gunther of Kingston, Matthew Hitchins and his wife Christine of Pembroke, and Robert Hitchins and his wife Shanah of Marshfield. She is also survived by her five grandchildren Danny, Patrick, CJ, Camden, and Addison.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Donations in Phyllis's memory may be made to the Massachusetts Humane Society Inc. Animal Organization, by mail to P.O. Box 850177, Braintree, MA 02185-0177 or online at https://masshumane.org/
