Phyllis died at home on October 21, 2025 after illness. Her husband Cameron was with her.
Phyllis was born March 23, 1941 in Havre, Montana, to Lois Amelia (Fultz) Rhine and Ronald Wilmer Rhine. While Phyllis was still very young, her family moved to Washington State. She grew up in Tacoma and was a top performer in her high school class. After earning her bachelor's degree at Pacific Lutheran, Phyllis drove her 1964 Ford Fairlane to California to take up teaching in the Ventura area. Subsequently she enrolled in graduate school at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. In her new hometown, Phyllis met Cameron Ray Hoover on a hiking trip organized by a Methodist group. They married on December 18, 1971 and honeymooned riding the bus from El Paso to Chihuahua. After earning her master's degree, Phyllis taught in Laguna-Acoma schools.
In 1975, Phyllis and Cameron moved to Southern California, then moved into their home in Pasadena on Independence Day 1976. Phyllis taught English at Glendale Community College and retired as a full professor. She particularly enjoyed camping in the Kern Mountains in California and making return visits to Albuquerque.
Phyllis and Cameron were for many years members at the First United Methodist Church in Glendale. They began attending All Saints Church in Pasadena in 1999.
Phyllis is predeceased by her brother, Douglas Rhine, and her uncles Lester and Earl Fultz. She is survived by her husband Cameron Hoover, her son Eric Hoover, her daughter Shayda Hoover Schilleman and her grandson Henry "Hal" Schilleman.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, with reception to follow.
