Phyllis McDonough Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home on Dec. 26, 2025.
Phyllis M. McDonough (née Gallagher), age 100 of Milton and Dennis Port, a cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at Cape Cod Hospital. Born on November 29, 1925, in Lowell, MA, she was the daughter of the late Hugh F. Gallagher and Adelaide (Harnden) Gallagher. Phyllis's life was a testament to her unwavering strength, kindness, and dedication to her loved ones.
A woman of remarkable character and poise, Phyllis was born, raised, and educated in her hometown of Lowell before relocating to Cambridge, MA. Her early career was marked by her role at Grinnell Fire Protection, followed by her tenure as a secretary at Stop and Shop Supermarket Company. It was there she demonstrated her exceptional work ethic and attention to detail. Upon the birth of her daughter Joan, Phyllis chose to focus on her family, embodying the role of a devoted mother with grace and love.
Phyllis later returned to the workforce, becoming a customer service representative at Merchants Cooperative Bank in Dorchester in 1977. Her colleagues remember her as a personable and reliable worker, always ready to assist customers with a warm smile until her retirement in 1989. Retirement did not slow her down; instead, it gave Phyllis more time to engage with her family, which was the center of her universe.
She will be lovingly remembered by her family, including her daughters Joan M. Leach and her husband Frederick G. Leach IV of Dennis Port, MA, and Theresa A. Hardiman of Braintree. Phyllis was a proud grandmother to John P. Hardiman III and his wife Millery, and Ashley Hardiman, as well as a doting Godmother to Karen Holmes Ronayne of Shrewsbury. Her life was enriched by the laughter and joy of her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert L. McDonough, who passed away on December 14, 2000. Their enduring love story remains an inspiration to their family. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Claire M. Lyman, James J. Gallagher, Mary G. Holmes, and Gerald J. Gallagher. Through the years, Phyllis often fondly recalled memories of her childhood and the bond she shared with her siblings.
Those who knew Phyllis will remember her for her unwavering support, her ability to listen compassionately, and her generous spirit. She was a woman of faith, and her guidance was often sought by those around her. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and the countless lives she touched with her gentle presence.
Phyllis M. McDonough's life was a beautiful journey of 100 years, filled with cherished moments and lasting relationships. As we say farewell, we celebrate the life of a woman who was not only the heart of her family but also a beacon of light for all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her memory will continue to shine brightly, guiding us with the wisdom and warmth she so freely shared.

Relatives and friends invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Elizabeth's Church, Milton Wednesday December 31st at 10:00 am. Burial to follow at Milton Cemetery.
