Phyllis Nicholas, 91, of Hardinville, IL, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Arbor Rose of Robinson, IL. Born in Hardinville on December 8, 1932, she was the daughter of Herman & Maxine (Burris) Martin. Phyllis would blossom into a remarkable woman who faithfully carried herself with strength, dignity, and an overwhelming love for family. Her heart found its match when she married the love of her life, Richard, on December 14, 1952. Together, they embarked on a global journey, creating a tapestry of memories that spanned continents and cultures.
Phyllis's professional path was as impressive as her personal one. With a sharp mind and a penchant for discretion, she served as a secretary for the Office of Special Investigations, holding top-secret clearance. Her role was not just a job; it was a testament to her trustworthiness and her ability to shoulder great responsibility with poise and integrity. In the 1990s, Phyllis's heart called her back to the area to be closer to her beloved sisters. It was here that she continued to cultivate her passions and embrace the joy of simple pleasures. From mushroom hunting to shopping excursions, Phyllis found happiness in the company of her family and the beauty of nature.
While these things brought her happiness, her deepest joy came from knowing Jesus. Phyllis was a cherished presence at Dayspring Christian Fellowship, where she nourished her faith and uplifted others with her unwavering commitment to the Lord. Her faith was not just a part of her; it was the compass that guided her through life's storms and celebrations. Because of her faith, we too can celebrate, knowing that she isn't gone; just gone from our sight and into the presence of the one she turned to time and again throughout her 91 remarkable years.
Phyllis's legacy is carried on by her sons & daughters-in-law, Steve & Sarah Nicholas and Danny & Sandra Nicholas; by her grandchildren, Stevie & Robert Calhoun, David Nicholas, Justin & Bridget Nicholas, Christina Ciani, Destiny Brown, and Madyson Brown; by her great-grandchildren, Andrea, Allie, Jackson, Avery, Noah and Alicia; by her brother & sister-in-law, Gary & Marilyn Martin; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman & Maxine Martin; her husband of nearly 52 years, Richard Nicholas; her brothers, Danny Martin and Herman F. Martin; and her sisters, Shirley Rij and Judy Eveland.
A time of visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m., and will be officiated by Pastor Butch Woods. Memorials may be made to a charity near and dear to her heart, the "Wounded Warrior Project", and memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hardinville Cemetery.
