Phyllis Thiesing Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Funeral Home - Fanwood on Mar. 27, 2026.
Phyllis Louise Thiesing passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 97.

Born in Schenectady, New York to Philip and Eleanor Augusta, Phyllis later moved with her family to Newark, where she was raised. She graduated in 1950 from Upsala College with a degree in psychology and further pursued her love of music by taking piano lessons at Juilliard School.

In 1955, Phyllis married and settled in Fanwood, where she lived for most of her life. A vibrant and social woman, she was actively involved in numerous community organizations, including the Scotch Plains Women's Club, the College Club, the Garden Club, and the Gourmet Cooking Club. She was a devoted member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and shared her musical talents as a pianist.

Phyllis had a gift for bringing people together. She was a gracious hostess, an accomplished chef, and a beloved baker-especially known for her apple crisp. She found joy outdoors, tending to her flowers each year, and she loved music and the arts. She performed in theater, danced in the chorus, and was a longtime member of the Scotch Plains Players.

Her professional life reflected her deep care for others. She worked as a substitute teacher in Scotch Plains and later, well into her 80s, as a paraprofessional at Franklin School in Westfield. She also held positions at Lord & Taylor and Sealfons. Phyllis was deeply loved by students and colleagues alike, known for her kindness, humor, and dedication. Each year, she delighted in taking her students mini golfing and out to lunch-a tradition they cherished.

Above all, Phyllis was devoted to her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and "Gigi," and shared a close bond with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was truly happiest when she was surrounded by her family.

Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, Phillip and Eleanor Augusta. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Richard) Goolsby and Patti Baeder; her grandchildren, Lauren (Nick) Dininno, Stephanie (James) Kaczorowski, Jonathan Goolsby, and Jason (Alisa) Goolsby; and her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Michaela, Norah, Jake, Izzi, and Lily.

A visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood NJ 07023, on Monday, March 30, from 5–7 PM. A funeral service will take place at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield on Tuesday, March 31, at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Phyllis will be remembered for her warmth, her laughter, her love of music and flowers, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
