It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Phyllis Morse Thomas, of Newport News, on July 6, 2025. She was one month shy of her 80th birthday, a milestone that she never thought she would even come close to reaching.
She was born in Elizabethton, TN, raised in Poquoson, VA, and a resident in Newport News, VA for most of her life.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents: John and Mamie Morse; brothers: Wayne, Jim, and Leonard Morse; and a sister she never met, Merita Morse.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Wayne Thomas; daughter, Tammy K. Thomas; and son, Roy Travis Thomas (Donna); and grandsons: Beaux and Brandon Thomas; brother, Paul D. Morse; sisters: Carol Whitley (Ken), Teddy Rohrbach (Sterling), Violet Firth (Jim), Cynthia Jenkins, Gail Morse; sisters-in-law: Jean Morse and Shirley Morse. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention by name.
Phyllis accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior in November 1974. She became a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. She was very active in the church and was the Director of Day Care for many years. There was no doubt that she loved children and desired more than anything else to lead them to the Lord to see their souls saved. She also had various Bible Studies in her home for many ladies and loved sharing the Word of the Lord with them.
We will greatly miss her earthly presence in our daily lives, but her memory will live on in our hearts and minds until we see her again in heaven. A graveside service, officiated by Pastor Robert Monteith, will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 11:00 am at Emmus Baptist Church Cemetery – 814 Yorktown Road, Poquoson, VA 23662. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.

Dear Thomas family,
You were all a part of my growing up years at Bethel Baptist Church. I remember your mother's smiling at church when she greeted people. She was always friendly and working to help in some capacity. I remember her being a Sunday school teacher for the wonderful folks from the Sarah Bonwell facility who were brought to church.
We shared many Thanksgiving gatherings with other church families also. Lots of good food, great fellowship & being welcomed like family. Good memories!
I saw your Mother at Captain D's recently, and she was still smiling with a sparkle in her eye.
God has brought her home to heaven for now, but what a blessed assurance to know Jesus has made the way for us to join in that heavenly celebratory gathering with her one day.
God comfort you, strengthen you & bring back many happy memories for you all. Her life was a gift that we got to treasure for this time. What a blessing! - Gloria Holt Rudisill on behalf of Glenda Holt as well

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Mrs. Thomas was such an encouragement to me. She taught me so much as a young, single adult. She will be greatly missed.
