Phyllis Wells Obituary

Mrs. Phyllis Paulette Clayborn Wells, 74, was born December 17, 1946 to the late Rufus “Pap” Clayborn, Sr. and Evelyn Simpson Clayborn. She transitioned from this life at home and entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Paulette was the second eldest of five siblings. At an early age, Paulette began living with her beloved grandmother, Pearl Coleman Simpson. Raised to serve God, she and her siblings joined Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church. As a member of the church, Paulette actively devoted her time in the Faithful Workers Missionary, served on the Usher Board and Gospel Choir. Paulette took pride in everything that she did. She was a proud graduate of J.C. Price High School Class of 1965. She continued her academics and went on to graduate from Salisbury Business College. On January 23, 1966, Paulette married her high school sweetheart, Clement “Toad” Isaiah Wells, Jr., and from this union they had two children, Patrick and ShaRhonda. Paulette was a dedicated, loving mother and wife to her family. In 1965 Paulette began her career at Livingstone College. She continued her professional career at Hood Theological Seminary and retired as Director of Auxiliary Services after 54 years of dedicated service. Her work was viewed as impeccable to the faculty and staff of Hood Theological Seminary. The students appreciated her patience, kindness and guidance. Paulette leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband, Clement “Toad” Isaiah Wells Jr.; a son, Patrick D. Wells; and a daughter, ShaRhonda A. Wells. She is also survived by one sister, Blanche Clayborn Ford, of Salisbury, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and precious friends who will miss her dearly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Pearl Clayborn Thompson; two brothers, Walter D. Clayborn and Rufus “Rusty” Clayborn, Jr. Memorial: In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity or organization of your choice in Paulette's memory. I’m saddened at this news. Mrs Wells was more than an advisor, she was more like my second mom. She was always genuine and viewed every trial as a possibility for God to show his best work. Rest In Peace Mother. Thanks for being apart of my life!

Mrs. Wells was a friend. I met her sometime ago and she treated me with love, kindness then and always had that beautiful smile. When I saw her short while back, she still had that smile and gave me a big hug. She will truly be missed not only at Hood, Livingstone, but her friends. She had many. To the family my prayers are with you and I will always remember her beauty, beautiful smile, kindness, advise, and love. I am going to miss my friend. Mrs. Phyllis Clayborn Wells. Rest In Heaven.

What an angel, I walked into the administrative offices, first time not knowing what to do. This quiet voice said may I help you, and took me by my hand. For me she was the voice of encouragement, and strength, A light to all who entered the doors Hood Seminary. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched.

Mrs. Wells welcomed me and my daughter when we moved to Salisbury in 1999. She immediately made us feel at home in a strange land. Her willingness to share her wealth of knowledge about Hood Theological Seminary was greatly appreciated. I would always tell people, "Mrs. Wells is Hood Theological Seminary and Hood Theological Seminary is Mrs. Wells." She was more than an employee, she was FAMILY!!! Her presence will never be forgotten. I will continue to lift the family up daily in my prayers.

Clement, Blanche, Walter & Family
My heart is truly broken at the news of Paulette's passing. I met her at Hood Seminary many, many years ago (in the 90's) when the Seminary was located on W. Thomas Street. She was a "Real Jewel, " listening to and giving sound, Christian Advice to not just the Students but to the Ministers as well. Her disposition was Angelic and I truly believe she has now put on her wings! RIP Paulette-God Bless You Family!
