On Sunday, August 6, 2023, Phyllis Catherine Weston (nee Macavia), passed away. She suffered for many years with Alzheimer’s Disease, but she is now at peace with her parents, Peter and Lucy Macavia, her brothers Peter and Donald, sister-in-laws Marie and Joanne, and her nephew, Anthony. She leaves behind her husband of almost 62 years, John, daughter Luci, son John, daughter-in-law Lynn, beloved grandson John Edward, and goddaughter, Joanne.
In her life, she loved her home, being a wife, homemaker, and mother. Christmas was her favorite time of year; she would start baking a variety of Christmas cookies early, which she would then hide in sealed tins around the house so they wouldn’t be eaten in advance. Every tin that was pulled out during the holiday week was a cookie surprise! Her eggplant parmigiana was always number one on the request list for family parties.
As a young girl, she loved rollerskating; later, she enjoyed walking for miles with her husband in town, and while away on vacations exploring the sites. She loved Cape May, NJ, and all it had to offer, bringing home souvenirs from every one of their trips. An avid reader, Phyllis was always swapping books with friends and neighbors, devouring her reading stack so she could trade for new ones. When she began working in downtown Cranford, she quickly got to know everyone and truly enjoyed the social aspect of retail.
While she lacked a green thumb for indoor plants, she grew roses from bare cuttings she planted in 1973 that still bloom today; at one point, her sweet william flowers grew to the shape and size of bushes, and red geraniums always captured her attention.
She will be missed, and would be happy if you thought of her whenever you see red geraniums.
Phyllis’ Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10AM Friday August 11, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Cranford. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements by Gray Memorial Funeral Home, Cranford. Please go to: www.grayfuneralhomes.com to offer condolences.
