Phyllis Ruth Zabel, age 95, of Brownstown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, May 28, 2025, at Hoosier Health and Living.
Phyllis' strong faith was a guiding presence throughout her life. She was baptized in Christ on July 7, 1929, and confirmed in faith on March 29, 1942, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown.
Ms. Zabel was a lifelong interior designer with a passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces. She graduated from Brownstown High School in 1947 and later graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a degree in Housing. Her professional journey began at Arvin's, where she worked as a drafter. She later continued her design career at Indianapolis Gas Company specializing in kitchen design and went on to serve as a corporate interior designer for Indianapolis Power & Light.
Phyllis had a deep love for nature, especially trees and butterflies. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bridge and golf, as well as traveling with friends. She was also dedicated to her community and served as a past board member of the Jackson County Community Foundation.
Born on June 12, 1929, in Seymour, Phyllis was the daughter of Emil F. and Malinda (Horstman) Zabel, both of whom preceded her in death
Survivors include one niece, Malinda (Terry) Burns of Indianapolis; two nephews: Bruce Peck and Paul (Melinda) Peck; and many cousins.
Phyllis was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane (James) Peck.
Funeral services for Phyllis Ruth Zabel will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown, with Pastor Ryan Schneider officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brownstown.
Interment will follow at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Cemetery or Jackson County Community Foundation.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring staff at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
