Dr. Prasanta C. Chandra, MD, FACOG, passed away on February 27, 2024, at the age of 77.
Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, in 1946, a son of Pratap and Leena Chandra Chunder. Though from a prominent political family, Dr. Chandra embarked on a remarkable around-the-world journey of healing and service. After graduating from Calcutta Medical College & Hospital, he traveled to the US in 1971 to pursue additional training and a career in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology (a specialization in high risk maternal-fetal medicine). A few years later Dr. Chandra met his wife at the Albert Einstein Medical Center & Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, New York where they would start their family before relocating to New Jersey.
Dr. Chandra's private practices in New Jersey and New York and tenure at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Hahnemann University, Medical College of Pennsylvania, Virtua Health System & Kennedy Memorial Hospital Systems South Jersey, Nassau County Medical Center and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center spanned over five decades. Numerous Honors and Awards were earned including serving as President of multiple medical societies, Super Doctor, New York Times, Castle Connolly Guide to NY Metro Area Top Doctors and Strathmore's Who's Who in the World. His tireless efforts touched countless lives, from routine check-ups to complex surgeries and deliveries. Patients admired his extensive knowledge, patience, empathy, humor and ability to listen.
Beyond clinical excellence and over 20 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and book chapters, Dr. Chandra was a mentor to aspiring healthcare professionals. His teaching, wisdom and guidance shaped the careers of many young doctors. Colleagues remember him as a pillar of strength, always willing to lend a helping hand or share a valuable insight.
In his free time, Dr. Chandra was passionate about ballroom dancing, literature, poetry, politics, travel and most of all time with his family.
Dr Chandra was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty years, Thatsani. Devoted father of Dipa (Chris) Chandra, Indra (Christina) Chandra and Prakash (Mayuri) Chandra. Loving grandfather of Owen, Iris, Luke, Katherine, Edward, Penna, Malin and Niam.
Dr. Prasanta Chandra's legacy continues through the many lives he touched. He was truly one of a kind, loved life and found the good in all people. As we bid farewell to this remarkable and compassionate soul, let us honor his memory by carrying forward the torch of healing and kindness.

I met Dr Chandra in 1992 when I started to work for Camden County Elections. He was highly recommended by a friend who I worked with. I knew him 28 yrs. (The age of my daughter now) He saved me and my daughter when she was born. I had preeclampsia on my first pregnancy. He was a wonderful Dr and a person. I miss him dearly.

Dr Chandra delivered my girls and always would ask me about them over all the many many years I came to him for my check ups. He was the most kind, compassionate and Humble man/ Dr I ever knew. He always wanted to listen to what I had to say and really cared about others. I loved listening to him tell me about his dancing and showing me pics of his dances. He truly was an inspiration in my life. My deepest condolences to his family and love ones. May he rest in peace. There is no other Dr like him. Catherine Smith

Dr. Chandra, words cannot express my sorrow for your passing. You were the absolute best OB-GYN in the universe since I was 19 years old.

My two sons Jeff (1991) and Ryan (1993) proudly display your wall of all the beautiful babies you have delivered. Not only did you deliver my sons, but you saved my life from cervical cancer in 2004. You literally made me feel like everything was going to be okay the whole time. It was cured ! I am forever grateful.

When I moved to Pa in 2000, I still drove 1.5 hours for my appointments. Just up until a couple of years ago, I finally changed my doctor due to your cutting back hours to live your passion for dancing. Rest easy Dr. Chandra. I hope you are dancing in Heaven. You will be missed dearly!

I have so many. Dr. Chandra was my guy! from his random phone calls in the middle of our conversations to his scratching his head while thinking of something interesting to say to me every 3 weeks I had to see him as my physician. He was a great man in so many ways. I´m thankful that he left a lasting impression on me. I do wish his family much peace and his many friends many happy memories. Dance on Dr. Chandra!
