PRESTON JOHNSON Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Caliman Funeral Services - Columbus on Feb. 17, 2026.
Preston Johnson, lovingly known as "PJ," was born on April 12, 1930, in Selma, Arkansas, to the late Wade and Ida Johnson. He departed this life on February 15, 2026.

PJ loved the Lord and faithfully served his church as a devoted Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he led by example, teaching not only with words, but through his actions.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army from July 29, 1950, to July 28, 1953, during the Korean War. Following his military service, PJ built a dedicated career with General Motors in Flint, Michigan.

PJ was well known for his skills as a Grill Master. He barbecued whole hogs on several occasions using an old-school, ground-dug pit - a labor of love that brought family and community together. His cooking, fellowship, and storytelling created memories that will last for generations.

He was welcomed into glory by his parents, Wade and Ida Johnson; his beloved wife of 70 years, Mabel; his son, Herman; his sisters, Idell, Marnette, Frances, Annie, Johnnie, and Alean; and his brothers, Wade Jr., Roman, and Theodis.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Wanda Woodie (Clinton), Fred Johnson (Jeryll), and Bruce Johnson (Soniqua); six grandchildren, Latoya, Herman Jr., Mark Jr., Prescott, Bruce II, and Lydia; two brothers, Oscar and Joe Lee; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

PJ's life was marked by faith, service, hard work, and love for family. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
