Purman Cofer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colonial Funeral Home of Irving on Jan. 23, 2026.
Purman L Cofer peacefully passed away on January 20, 2026, in Denton, Texas, at the age of 96. He was born in Dallas, Texas on July 30, 1929. He grew up in South Dallas, then later moved to Oak Cliff and eventually to Irving, Texas in 1963. He lived in the same house in Irving until November 2025 when he moved into the Rambling Oaks Assisted Living Center in Highland Village, Texas.

Purman was a proud graduate of Crozier Tech High School in Dallas, where he studied woodshop and learned the trade of cabinet making. He held a number of jobs in the woodworking field including Wunderlich Construction, renovating the homes of singer Charlie Pride, Lorenz Neuhoff of Nuhoff Meat Packing, and Joseph Haggar of Haggar Slacks. While working for Qualitron Aero Services in the 70's, he was on the crew refurbishing Air Force One when Richard Nixon was president. Purman built a workshop in his back yard where he spent many hours in the evenings after work building cabinets and other furniture. His family is blessed by owning several pieces of furniture he made.

Known for his love of the great outdoors, Purman loved fishing and camping. In addition to regular fishing trips to Grapevine Lake, Lake Lewisville, and Lake Texoma, he annually took a two-week trip in his RV to camp out at Richland Chambers Lake until he was physically no longer able to do so.

Purman is survived by sons, David Cofer, Don Cofer and his wife Donna Cofer; grandsons Bradley Cofer, Nicholas Cofer and his wife Emilee Cofer; granddaughter, Mallory Rie and her husband Justin Rie; as well as four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jesse Freeman Cofer, mother, Thelma Cofer. His wife Fay (Sue) Bernice Cofer who passed away in December of 2000. His brother PFC Freeman Lee Cofer, who tragically lost his life at the young age of 19 in Lorraine, France in 1945 during World War II.

Purman was a faithful and longtime member of the Beltline Road Church of Christ and will be greatly missed by his church family. Purman's departure from this earth leaves behind a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am, January 31, 2026, at the Belt Line Road Church of Christ. Burial will follow at the Rest Land Cemetery in Dallas immediately following his funeral services at the church.

I really miss him. He was such a wonderful person and friend. It is really difficult not having him around any more.
