Obituary of Quentin F Sweeney

Quentin Sweeney, 87, a lifelong resident of Coralville, Iowa, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026-his 87th birthday-at the University of Iowa Hospital following a sudden illness. He left this world exactly as he entered it, though with significantly more stories, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.

Born on January 17, 1939, to Robert and Doris (Bowman) Sweeney. Quentin graduated from University High School ("U-High") in Iowa City. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army. On May 13, 1967, he married the love of his life, Sandra Jensen, beginning a 58-year adventure.

Quentin spent the first half of his career as a General Contractor before transitioning to his true professional passion: serving as the Parks and Recreation Superintendent for the City of Coralville. He took immense pride in his work and cherished the residents of the community he served-though he likely cherished his daily Pepsi even more.

An avid outdoorsman, Quentin found his greatest joy in nature. Whether he was mushroom hunting, boating, or fishing, he was happiest with the sun on his face. He especially treasured the annual family fishing trips to Minnesota. Quentin was a man of simple, refined tastes: he never met a steak he didn't like, believed a Snickers bar was a perfectly balanced snack, and wasn't opposed to an occasional glass of red wine to wash it all down.

Above all, Quentin lived for his family. He thrived in the "never a dull moment" atmosphere created by his seven active grandchildren, all of whom inherited his signature "spice" and penchant for mischief.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra; his two daughters, Stacie (David) Gisleson of North Liberty and Darcie (Brian) Ahrens of Coralville; and his seven grandchildren: Quentin, Kaden, Keyan, and Addison Gisleson, and Connor, Zachary, and Corbin Ahrens. He is also survived by his siblings, Sherry (Bill) Frantz and Gary (Rose) Graham. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom Graham.

In accordance with family wishes, no formal services will be held. A family celebration of life will take place in the spring, where the steak will be plentiful, and the Pepsi will be cold.

My condolences to Sandy and the girls, I know Quentin loved his family, Pepsi or coffee, and a Pall Mall ' as it was a usual topic of conversation. I am glad to have worked under Quentin's supervision at Coralville Parks. He prepared me well to eventually replace his position at Coralville when he retired. Quentin had lived some life before I met him and always had a story to go along with whatever project or topic of conversation we had.
