Quinton J. Rothman

Quinton J. Rothman, who worked hard and lived a life of generosity and faith, passed away on June 19th, 2023 after a long battle with degenerative spinal disease. He was surrounded by his family who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johannes Christoffel Rothman and Florence Ida Clementine Rodgers and his wife of 52 years, Margaret Ann Rothman (nee Peddie). He is survived by his sister Mary Anderson, who resides in South Africa; his sons David (Janet), Christopher (Deryl), and Richard (Bernadette); eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Quinton was born on January 16th, 1937 in Krugersdorp, South Africa. He served in the South African Air Force (SAAF) between 1956-1958 as an Air Mechanic. After completing his military service Quinton received an Associates Certificate from the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1963. He began his career with the Gold Fields group, a gold mining company in South Africa where he started as an electrical technician and worked his way up to Assistant Resident Engineer overseeing all the engineers for the mine he worked at. Quinton dedicated 33 years of service to Gold Fields before retiring early in 1990 due to Meniere’s Disease.

 

Quinton and his wife immigrated to the USA on September 11, 2001 following in the footsteps of their three boys. Their flight was however diverted back to the Netherlands due to the attack on the World Trade Centers. Quinton officially became an American Citizen on February 21, 2007.

Quinton will be remembered for his adventurous spirit and love for his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving but strict father. He lovingly took care of his wife in her final years, learning to do her dialysis at home until she passed.

 

When he wasn’t working, Quinton enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. It was his goal to visit as many places as possible and they would often collect fridge magnets from each destination and display it on his fridge as a keepsake of the memories they had created together. Quinton also loved bird watching, wild life and going on long walks. In his final years he found peace in going on drives with his daughter-in-law Bernadette where they would "Get Lost" and find beautiful local places, sights and Utah wildlife. On his walks, he loved to stop and talk with his neighbors and people along the way. He was also known to participate in stand-up jet skiing and parasailing with his sons. He had a fondness for ice-cream and would turn down steak in lieu of a Freddy’s shake.

Quinton was also very generous with his time and talents. This was evident in his later years when he would often donate hours of service as a general handyman to neighbors around him who needed help with various projects. He even spent some years working at Home Depot where he assisted others with their DIY projects.

In the closing years of his life, Quinton strengthened his faith when he followed his son into the congregation of The Adventure Church in Draper.  After seeing Richard’s baptism, one year later Quinton renewed his Christian faith by being baptized as well. This act showed that even in old age, he was still standing proud as an example of a righteous man who was learning Christ-like attributes.

Quinton J. Rothman will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on June 24th, 2023 at City View Memoriam located at 1001 East 11th Avenue, Salt Lake City, UT 84103, from 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM to remember him and celebrate the life he lived.
