Rachel Elaine Powers 62, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away at Overland Park Regional Medical Center on March 7, 2024. She was born on November 7, 1961, in Chanute, Kansas to S.Sgt. Benny and Elvira (Vera) Mendez. She married the love of her life James Powers on May 14, 1994, at Westview Baptist Church in Chanute, Kansas. Rachel was a loving and compassionate individual who will be deeply missed.
She was a talented hairdresser who owned and operated a beauty shop called Mane Attraction, leaving a lasting impact on all those who had the pleasure of sitting in her chair. Throughout her career, she also lent her skills to various other establishments, showcasing her passion and dedication to her craft.
Rachel's journey began after completing her education at Chanute High School, continuing her education at Neosho County Community College, and obtaining a Hairdresser License from Independence Community College. She also worked for the United States Postal Service. Her commitment to continuous learning and honing her skills was evident in the beautiful work she produced for her clients over the years and the service she gave her postal customers.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Rachel was a cherished daughter, wife, and friend. She is survived by her sister Rebecca (David) Roles and brother Philip David Mendez, both of Chanute, Kansas, her niece Amanda (Jason) Farris, and their son Nathaniel Farris, In-laws Judy (Conrad) Froehlich, Steven (Patti) Powers, Glen (Kay) Powers, Milton Powers, and fur baby Bella.
Rachel is preceded in death by her parents S.Sgt. Benny and Elvira (Vera) Mendez., her husband James, her maternal and paternal grandparents, and In-laws Kenneth and Misty Powers.
Rachel will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her kindness, talent, and warm spirit will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace knowing that she made the world a more beautiful place in more ways than one.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Wickham Family Funeral Home 500 North Forest Ave. Chanute, Kansas 66720 followed by a Celebration of Life Funeral Service on Friday, March 15, 2024. at 10:30 AM at the First Baptist Church Good News Center, 118 North Forest Avenue, Chanute, Kansas, 66720.
Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas, following the funeral service.Memorials in honor of Rachel can be made out to The First Baptist Food Pantry or The Cherry Street Youth Center and can be mailed to or left with the funeral home.
