Rachel Lourdes Madrigal Sanchez was born as Rafaella to Martina Torrez Madrigal and Rafael Madrigal, two immigrants from Michoacan, Mexico. As the youngest of four children—her brother Alfred and sisters Tillie and Victoria—Rachel grew up surrounded by family and the stories of their journey.

After traveling and working in Wyoming, the Madrigal family settled in Sheridan, where they began farming. Rachel’s childhood on the farm was filled with both joyful and challenging experiences. She found comfort in the companionship of her pets—a male cat named Gracie and a pig named Paula. Among her favorite memories was the thrill of riding her horse bareback across the fields at the base of the Big Horn mountains, a story she cherished and often shared.

Rachel married L. Archie Sanchez, who was born in San Luis, Colorado. Together, they had two children: Debra Marlene and Ricardo Reynaldo. Rachel dedicated herself to her work at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital and the VA Hospital, serving her community with compassion and diligence.

She loved fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains, finding peace and joy in the natural beauty of the region. Her garden was a source of pride, and she delighted in making jellies from wild plums, chokecherries, and buffalo berries. Her rhubarb pies were renowned as works of art, and many of these traditions were passed down from her mother.

Rachel cared deeply for her husband, Archie, and was by his side when he passed away in February 2005. The following year, in January 2006, she faced another loss with the passing of her grandson, Eric James Hultberg. In response to these changes, Rachel made the decision to sell her home and move to Texas, seeking a fresh start near family.

She chose Evergreen Apartments, just two blocks from her family’s home, and quickly became part of a vibrant community. Rachel taught herself to play the guitar, inspired by Esteban from QVC, and formed a close friendship with Beatrice, a fellow music lover from Venice Beach, California. Together, they performed at Senior Centers in Roanoke, Keller, and other locations, sharing their love of guitar and country music. Rachel also joined a local band for Sunday jam sessions in Azle, where she found joy in connecting with others who shared her Mexican heritage.

Her youngest son, Ricardo Reynaldo, was born on her birthday, February 11, 1958. He passed away last February, just days after their shared birthday, at the age of 67. Rachel faced this loss with the strength and resilience she had always shown.

As the last surviving member of her immediate family, Rachel spoke of her loved ones with deep affection and gratitude. She often expressed her hope to one day be reunited with them, embracing the memories and legacy they left behind.

Rachel is preceded in death by her husband, Archie, her son, Rick and her grandson, Eric.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Debra, Debra's husband, Ron, granddaughter, Carrie, grandson, Cody, grandson, Bryan and great grandson, Daniel.
