Rachel Whittingham was born January 16, 1932, in Mocho, Clarendon, Jamaica, WI, to the late Henry and Inez Drummond. She was the sixth of twelve children and was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings. Rachel began her early education at Mocho Elementary School before moving to Kingston to live with her Aunt Ann. She continued her schooling at Marverley Elementary School in Kingston.
Following graduation, she worked diligently at the Marverley Haberdasher Department Store. During this time, Rachel met the loveof her life, and from their union, two children were born: Pauline and Derrick. Eager to provide a better life for her family, Rachel migrated to the United States. Her hard work soon paved the way for her children to join her in America.
A savvy businesswoman, Rachel made wise investments, including acquiring a three-family income property, which became one of herearliest successes. She was also known for her skills as an excellent housekeeper and cook who loved entertaining guests. No one ever left her home empty-handed, as she always sent them off with a generous take-out bag. Rachel enjoyed traveling, often visiting her sister Delores and other beloved relatives and friends in Florida and Montreal. Albertha and her family were frequently her traveling companions, sharing cherished memories along the way.
Approximately eighteen years ago, Rachel relocated to Albany, NY, to be near Albertha, Nellie, Velma, and her extended family. Despite a diagnosis of vertigo, that limited her ability to enjoy some of her favorite activities, she maintained her independence with grace and resilience. Though she made the difficult decision to sell her home and move into a small apartment, she continued to handle her own finances, cook, and clean for herself well into her 90s. At the age of 92½, Rachel remained spirited and determined, even taking the bus to New York City. Known for her stubbornness, pride, and strong will, she was adamant about not accepting help from others.
On March 3rd, Rachel Whittingham went home to be with the Lord. She leaves behind her beloved children, Pauline and Derrick; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will forever cherish her memory. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
