Ralph Thomas Bauer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, at the age of 76. He was born on October 23, 1948, in Alpena, Michigan, to the late Ralph and Irene (O’Neil) Bauer.
On June 22, 1974, Ralph married the love of his life, Cathy DiMarzo, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alpena. Their partnership, marked by love, laughter, and loyalty, spanned over 50 years. Together they raised two daughters, Misty (Ken) Dragiewicz and Lora (Chris) Bauer Carlson. Ralph took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to seven wonderful grandchildren: Eve, Faith, Reece, Finn, Indigo, Odin, and Knox, who filled his life with joy and pride.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Buck” to those closest to him, Ralph lived a life grounded in wisdom, humor, and humility. He was a devoted family man who worked tirelessly to provide for his wife and daughters, always putting their needs before his own. Ralph found joy in life’s simple pleasures—sipping a good beer, playing a game of horseshoes at the family cottage on Long Lake, and being surrounded by those he loved. His genuine nature and tough-love approach endeared him to many. He was known for his quick wit, often joking, “I was wrong one time in my life—and that’s when I thought I was wrong.”
Ralph had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or golfing in his later years, he cherished his time in nature. He especially loved sharing those moments with his brother Arnie—his best friend and favorite drinking buddy. From perch fishing, hunting, and playing cards to bowling, the two were inseparable.
In his later years, Ralph enjoyed wintering in Florida, where he played golf regularly, embraced retirement, and made many new friends.
Professionally, Ralph dedicated much of his life to Huron Portland Cement (now Holcim), where he retired as a skilled and respected millwright. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and camaraderie with colleagues.
Ralph was a longtime member of St. John Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a proud member of the Evergreen Hunt Club and a dedicated bowler in the Huron Shores League, where he built lifelong friendships.
He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Linda (Dave) Soltysiak, Barb (Patrick) Richard, Ron (Debbie) Bauer, and Karen (Kim) Kaiser, along with many nieces and nephews who were touched by his lively spirit. Ralph was preceded in death by his sister, Carol (Jim) Ferguson.
Ralph’s passing leaves a space filled with love, laughter, and treasured memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of Ralph on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at St. Anne Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, celebrated by Fr. Emmanuel Finbarr. Arrangements are being handled by A.E. Ross Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to Hospice of Michigan or Alpena Cancer Center.
