Ralph Defino was not only the best Principal, he made our staff a family! He was kind, but serious, and well respected. We all regretted the day he retired! He is in Heaven with his wife and youngest daughter, leaving in peace and escorted by angels.

To Ralph´s family,
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Your father was a very special person who seemed to have a positive influence on everyone he met. I was lucky as a new principal to have had Ralph call me and ask me to visit his school.
When I arrived there was a fifth grader in the office being confronted for an infraction of school rules. He took my out of the office and told me to "play along". Next thing I know, he introduced my as Lieutenant Civettini from the Hollywood Police. By the time that boy left the office he was crying and apologizing for whatever he had done. It was a great way to put the fear of God in him without calling parents, suspension or any additional punishment. Oh, and we had a blast pulling it off.
Ralph was a great mentor who taught me how to survive the job and more important became a good friend. We kept in touch after retirement for awhile but unfortunately it´s easy to let months turn into years especially when Jeannie and I moved north to Ponce Inlet.
During many of our visits and conversations the topic of family, moving to America from the "old country" and wonderful stories about relatives and all of you-- his beautiful family-was the main focus not school.
You are very blessed to have had a father like Ralph. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family during these difficult times. My apologies for missing his celebration of life but my heart will be there with you!
Sincerely,
John

Mr Defino changed my life. He believed in me and allowed me to teach Prefirst in a very non traditional way. He not only supported me in all I did, he participated.
A quick story, we were studying the letter E. We simulated an election. The issues, the ballots, ballot box and someone SPECIAL to tally the votes. Yes, Ralph Defino dressed as Uncle Sam and tallied the votes for the election.
Ralph was a Special Principal beyond words. Only those of us who had the privilege to work WITH him knew.
He changed an uncountable number of lives. Ralph was truly a gift.
He will always hold a special place in my heart.
Fondly,
Linda Strutz
