Ralph Leonard Michael, a beloved figure in his community, passed away peacefully at his home on October 21, 2025. Born in Gaston County, North Carolina, on December 10, 1943, Ralph was the youngest son of the late George and Mamie Cruse Michael. He lived a life defined by hard work, passion, and devotion to both family and friends.
Ralph’s career was deeply rooted in construction, a field where he demonstrated not only skill but also dedication. His love for racing was a significant part of his life as well. He made his mark as a valued member of the pit crew for NASCAR driver Jim Vandiver, alongside assisting local short track racing stars such as Freddie Smith, Carl Smart, and Stick Elliott. This involvement in racing brought him immense joy and allowed him to forge lasting friendships within the sport.
An avid learner, Ralph attended Mount Holly schools, later pursuing his education at Gaston College and Georgia Southern. His commitment to education underscored his belief in continuous growth and development.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ralph had a profound appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed fishing and farm work, activities that connected him with nature and provided him with a sense of tranquility. His active participation as a former member of the Belmont VFW and the Loyal Order of the Moose Club further highlighted his engagement with his community, sharing camaraderie and support with fellow members.
Ralph shared a loving partnership with his wife, Hazel Michael, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Bonnie Beatty; brothers-in-law, James and John Beatty; and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished their time with him.
He will be remembered not only for his contributions to his profession and hobbies but also for the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers Gaylard (Sonny), Burma (Mike), and Ted, and sisters Betty Jean Clawson and Gloria (Chuck) Farmer.
As we remember Ralph Leonard Michael, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and lasting memories. His spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
