On January 21st, 2023 Ralph Karl Schmitz (Opa) passed away at the age of 90. He was born on January 29, 1932 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to parents Peter A. and Edith (Widder) Schmitz. He married Marianne (Oma) Panzer Schmitz on October 29, 1953. In 1954, shortly after giving birth to their first-born son, the couple moved from Essen, Germany to Fort Worth, Texas. Together, they had four children. In 1985, the couple moved to Austin, TX, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Ralph's career centered around the Life Insurance industry. He finished his career as a life insurance executive and he was a member of Rotary. Ralph's career allowed him to travel extensively around the world. He made many friends and acquaintances along the way.
Ralph loved traveling with Marianne and playing poker with his buddies. He enjoyed spending time with his 9 grandchildren and was looking forward to being a great grandfather in May of this year. Knowing he would be a great grandfather brought him great pride and joy.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents Peter and Edith Schmitz, and by his beloved wife Marianne Schmitz.
Ralph is survived by his four children, Wilfried Schmitz (Sue) of Houston, TX, Keith Schmitz (Lisa) of Keller, TX, Edith Kachnik (Bob) of Houston, TX, and Peter Schmitz (Pam) of Austin, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Andrew Kachnik, Kendra Schmitz, Kelley Kachnik, Alexander Schmitz, Zachary Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Olivia Schmitz, Isabella Schmitz, and Ethan Schmitz.
A Rosary is scheduled for 9:30 am on Saturday, February 11th, 2023 with a Funeral mass to follow beginning at 10:00 am at St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic Church located at 4311 Small Drive, Austin, TX 78731. Father Larry Covington will officiate. Interment will follow at Remembrance Gardens at Riverbend.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ralph's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be sent to the charity of your choice in Ralph Schmitz's name.
