Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Gallo Funeral Home - Guthrie on Oct. 28, 2025.
Randell "Randy" Carson Russell was born on April 10th, 1958 in Oklahoma City, OK to Marvin L. Russell and Velma Ruth Lowe Russell. He left this world suddenly on October 27, 2025 at home while doing the yard work he deeply enjoyed.
Randy grew up with his older sister, Marvina and graduated from Northeast High School in 1976. Randy started his career in the grocery business, but dreamed of working in radio. He met his wife, Lana Anthis while working together at Kimberling's IGA grocery store and they married in 1977. That same year, he obtained his license in radio engineering from Elkins Institute and started part-time at KOKC radio. Lana and Randy had their first daughter, Angela, in 1980 and their second, Heather, in 1984.
Wanting to provide for his family, Randy left his part-time radio career in 1980 to return to full-time work in the grocery business. For twelve years, Randy put his radio dream on pause. In 1992, he was thrilled to start part-time at KOMA doing weekend and fill-in work and fully achieved his dream in 1996 when he started full-time. Randy worked at KOMA for 31 years until retiring in December 2023.
Randy was delighted with the birth of his grandchildren and grandnieces, loved teasing them, and was a faithful and frequent presence at their activities. After retirement, he stayed busy doing yardwork (especially mowing), volunteering at Guthrie Christian Church, researching his family's genealogy, and traveling with Lana to visit family gravesites. Randy often shared his quick, dry wit with his family, had an encyclopedic memory of music, a beautiful love of children, and a quiet desire to do things well. His family was deeply aware of Randy's increasing devotion to Jesus and how that love uniquely showed up in his life.
Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin L. Russell and Velma Ruth (Lowe) Russell and grandparents, Albert and Zealin Lowe and Millard and Mabel Russell.
Randy is survived by his wife, Lana; his daughter, Angela Calvert and husband, Kevin of Stillwater; his daughter, Heather Edwards and husband, Brad of Edmond. He is survived by his grandchildren, Ella Calvert (20), Madelyn Calvert (17), Isaac Edwards (11), and Natalie Edwards (9). Randy is also survived by his older sister, Marvina Lapointe and husband, Marty; his niece, Erin Ellis and husband, Tony, and their daughters, Shelby (19) and Kennedy (14). He will also be remembered by two aunts, Martha Christensen and Yvonne Russell, and several beloved cousins.
Randy's funeral service will take place at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 31, 2025 at Guthrie Christian Church located at 4318 South Division Street in Guthrie. Interment will take place at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street,
