Randy C. Prokop was born to Claire and Lily (Storjohan) in Battle Creek, Iowa, on July 2, 1952. He was raised on a farm. He went to school in Battle Creek and was one of the 18 that graduated. In 1970, he went to Denver, Colorado, to go to Denver Automotive and Diesel Auto Body College. He graduated in 1971. He enlisted in the Air Force in December of 1971. He was stationed at Grissom Air Force Base. He left the service with an honorable discharge in December of 1975. In 1976, he opened his own body shop. He started out in a small building on W Eighth St. in Peru. He ran out of room so he bought a building on Tenth St.
On Oct. 21, 1978, he married Louanna Snyder. Together they would go to demolition derbys. Sometimes he would race in them. On the weekends, they would hook up their pop up camper and take off to the Dirt Late model races. They met some great people that were first friends, and then became the racing family.
He loved to go to auctions and rummage sales with his adopted Indiana mom, Willie Hoos. They would have "barn sales" on Paw Paw Pike. They met some great people there, also. He had a little red truck and would go through town and pick up pallets. Bring them home, fix them up, and sell them.
He is survived by his wife, Louann; two step sons, Don (Tina) Dewey, Peru, IN, Tim (Christina) Wallace, Lafayette, IN, Elissa, Troy, Austin, Bridgette, Lexi, and Kevin; six great-grandchildren, Karygan, Andrew, Leo, Lilymae, Carsynn, and Lynkynn; two half brothers, Dean Wood, South Carolina, Vern Wood, Iowa, and special friend, Eric Winters.
Randy is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carlette Casey, and grandson, Michael Dewey.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 W Third St., Peru. The funeral service will follow at noon with Pastor Dustin Smith officiating. Interment will take place at Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.
