Randy Whitson Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Sep. 14, 2022.
Randall Dean Whitson of Norman, Oklahoma, born on September 18, 1964, passed away from this life on September 12, 2022, at the age of 57. Randy was born and raised in Thomas, Oklahoma, the son of Paul Duane Whitson and Della Fern (Sweeney) Whitson.
After graduating from Thomas High School in 1982, Randy began attending Southwestern University in Weatherford, and later enrolled in classes at the University of Oklahoma where he studied Journalism. He began dating Kim in 1986, and on June 19, 1987, Randy married the love of his life in Gainesville, Texas in a quiet and lovely ceremony at the local courthouse. From this union, two children were born, Rebecca, and Kyle. The couple lived in Weatherford until 1988 when they moved to Norman to be closer to family.
Randy was clever, loving, and above all, devoted to his family. He was a terrific husband and dad who loved nothing more than time spent with those he loved, always incorporating entertainment into everything he did. Every summer while his children were growing up, Randy took his family on vacation, making beautiful, lasting memories together in Branson, Missouri, the beaches of Galveston and Port Aransas, Texas, among many other fun destinations. When his granddaughter was born, his entire world shifted, and Emme was at the center of it. Randy loved his baby granddaughter with his entire heart and soul, and his favorite hobby was calling his son, Kyle, and asking if Emme could come over and play. He liked repairing and restoring cars and enjoyed tinkering on the cars and trucks he owned, a hobby he developed with his dad, P.D., as a youngster. He especially loved making repairs to his Chevy Colorado, which boasts over 400,000 miles and has featured two motors (so far). He was funny and fun to be around, and his wonderful, dry sense of humor never failed to produce the most genuine laughter from everyone within earshot. To ensure he never forgot their anniversary, Randy got he and Kim's wedding anniversary date tattooed inside a Chevy emblem on his arm. He enjoyed fishing any time he had the chance, and loved watching OU football, and even loved the Dallas Cowboys, much to the chagrin of everyone with good taste. In later years, he simply liked sitting outside near his flagpole so he could watch his flags.
Randy will be remembered for his loyalty, his dedication to his family, and the pure love he radiated into the world. He will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul "P.D." and Della Fern Whitson, his uncle Everett and aunt Ruth Sweeney, and his in-laws, Barbara Fowler, and Terry Bishop.
Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 35 years, Kim Whitson of Norman; his children and their families, daughter Rebecca Birckett and her husband John, and their son, Brycen, all of Moore, Oklahoma, and son Kyle Whitson and his wife, Miranda, and their daughter, Emme, of Norman; his uncle Jimmie Sweeney and aunt Sherrl; one sister, Shelly Whitson, and one brother, Malcolm Whitson; his lifelong best friends, Tom Moore, and David Strutton, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends.
