Ray Austin, 78, of Coal City West Virginia, suddenly passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at his home.
Ray was born March 11, 1947, to Elmer and Carol (Holdren) Austin. He was married to his junior high sweetheart JoAnn Austin for 62 years.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, JoAnn Austin; son, Gary Austin and wife Kelli and their children Joshua, Nicholas (Kaylee) and Zachary; son Tim Austin and wife Cherie and their children Christopher (Emilie), Sarah (JC), Aaron (Cassie) and Laura (Tyler); his brother Alan and wife Brenda; his sister Carolyne; and great grandchildren Ben, Lawston, Adaleigh, and Payton.
Ray taught school in Raleigh County for 28 years and retired as the WV History teacher at Independence (Stoco) Middle School. Ray gave much to the community youth while coaching both the football and basketball teams. When not gardening, woodworking and searching for ginseng, he spent his time fishing and bird hunting with his beloved 4-legged girls Cella, Molly, and Lexi.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, March 24, 2025 from 11am to 1pm at Calvary Assembly of God @ 319 Sunset Drive Beckley, WV. A memorial service will begin at 1pm with Pastor John Jordan officiating. Ray will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley WV. Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers. Words of comfort and condolences may be offered to the family by visiting Calvary Assembly of God.
