Ray Vern Bauguess, 85, of Traphill, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026, at his home.

Born on November 23, 1940, in Wilkes County, Mr. Bauguess was the son of the late Colon Bauguess and Bessie Bray Bauguess. He devoted much of his life to serving others, first as a firefighter and first responder with the Traphill Fire Department. Mr. Bauguess was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served his country with honor.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bauguess was preceded in death by his sister, Leonna Hayes; his brother, Alton Bauguess; and his step-son, Steven Woodring.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Virginia Bauguess, of the home; his son, Kylan Bauguess, also of the home; three daughters, Melissa King of Traphill, Amanda (Eric) Sales of North Wilkesboro, and Chandra (Joshua Bentley) Mabe of Boone. He also leaves behind his step-children, Jean (Lynn) Reid, Randy (Melissa) Woodring, and Karen (Scott) Hall; his sister, Bonnie Blevins of Traphill; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bauguess was also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Christopher Williams, Grayson Williams, Isaiah Bauguess, Stella Bauguess, Olandrea Foster, Kallie Foster, Jayden London, and Kaleb Buck, as well as four great-grandchildren: Kaine Williams, Lydia Williams, Asa Ray Williams, and Brayden Gregory.

A celebration of life service with military honors will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who have shown their love and support during this time.
